  1. Ha ha ha,....Phil, a think it's cause a only ever seen pictures, diagrams, etc of old wood full barrels & half barrels, etc, in old books, or wherever,...NEVER actually thought as a mole catcher, a would ever get the chance to have one, never mind try & use one to catch with ?,...until I heard about Bob Merrin. (you'll probably understand, being a moleman, yourself ? Iol)
  2. This is a Bob Merrin, original,..note the mumble,...remember Bob referring to it, as a "roundy peg",..hand carved, that trigger, out of yew, too ! & photo below, is a machine turned one, made out of Ash, with the more familiar, hazel forked trigger.
  3. Here's the one spring I have left,...needs to have them wee end bits, for attaching through wee holes, on the wood barrel body, etc (unless there's a better way to attach them ? Iol)
  4. Sounds well thought out that,..really good. As you've said if your experimenting with the length, of your traps & can catch somewhere, behind them front paws, etc, consistently,...would be ideal that ?
  5. Hey mate, a really like your aluminium version of the full barrel. Clever stuff. You know at one time a wouldnt have thought old mole , would enter & travel plastic pipe & get caught ? lol ,...until Bob proved otherwise. Do you make your own springs for your traps too, by the way ?
  6. "strangulation" apparently, refers to the neck area. So where you catching your moles by the neck , when you tried the full barrel ? (as i say more likely with your putange , catching by the head or neck, on occasion ! lol) & can i ask, what type where you using, & made by whom, please ?
  7. Oh right, is it difficult to source now ?,..whats the name of that black cord/twine your using yourself , there ?
  8. Fair enough, thats YOUR view,....& just like YOUR Putange. Poor mole was caught by the face once, when i checked the trap,..& very much still alive & suffering,...... (i cant forget that one, unfortunately !) & again take YOUR Talpex type,...(or indeed the genuine one),..on occasion when pulling up the sprung trap, very soon after setting (youll know what a mean),...mole still expiring, not for too long, granted,.....but there you go ? oh,...& before you express, wasnt 'operator error' either,...jaws hit the mole correctly ! lol
  9. Thanks, for another intriguing post here,...mate, am sure 'Jeff Nicholls' constructed & demonstrated the old trap your descibing here. It was in one of his books or videos, i think. Yes, & your right i reckon, setting the modern traps is a doddle, compared to these earlier methods.
  10. Aye, a wouldnt argue that doesnt happen,....but at what frequency ? 9 times out of 10 say, for example ?,...a just dont think so, myself, BUT aye, equally, maybe am wrong on that, too ?
  11. Could well be, a think theres a name for that stuff,....a thought a read, just cant remember
  12. Oh forgive me, mate. A didnt realise that was your assessment of them , after field trialing them ? ? Thought provoking, though ? "strangling",...you would envision perhaps, as snaring it round the neck, would you mean ?,.....cause NO, thats not the case,....but i think i know what your getting at,....& really cause of the traps 'mode of action' coupled with Bobs triple coiled , high tensile , double springs,.....ive found a swift demise (if caught correctly),....however, i wouldnt claim they are more humane, than the current 'rated' modern traps. (lets face it does a mole perish INSTANTL
  13. Mate, old Bob supplied it, somebody will know the name of that stuff, cause a cant recall ? On his wee video on you tube, am sure he demonstrates tying & knotting them, sized for his traps.
  14. Really, aye, a think the "flat wood and the loops were channelled iron" ones, could possibly be an early wooden half barrel, forerunner ? (or a slightly different 'spin' on it ?)
  15. Good on you mate,..am impressed with your ingenuity here !
  16. Well, im very pleased to now have, that one of yours Phil (makes it that wee bit more special too ! ha ha)
  17. Does he really ?,...well, that sounds interesting. Mate, im not very handy at all, as regards making them,...lol So ave had a woodturner boy make me a couple, out of ash, as an experiment (too dear,..as we would say, though lol,...so a havent had many) Based on Bobs original he kindly sent up,....a tried to get them done to my own dimensions, for humaneness considerations, etc. Again, Bob supplied the springs. Youve maybe heard, Bob updated the wooden ones, using 'plastic gas pipe', for the body ? A found a photo on the web once, somebody put up of a mole catcher down in the borders. Saying,
  18. "setting them" ?,..more time consuming,..... & "bother wise", yes, more ! ? But, i find it very satisfying, when you successfully catch, a mole in them. The olden day, catchers had it harder than us, & arguably perhaps, a higher skill level ?,...a mean look what they used even before the clay & wood barrel traps, etc ? ? Also, im sure ive seen both types listed in your old catalogue examples, when browsing them before, but, i dont know if ive seen them both featuring together, for sale,.... possibly though ? Ive heard there was a maufactured type of wooden barrel trap, referred
  19. Elm full barrel trap, with a capture. After extensive trials, seems reasonably humane, overall ,with no signs of the mole struggling. As long as its caught in the right area, that is. This is all achieved, with the benefit of Bob Merrins, strong coiled springs, powering the trap. But, its not immune from the odd 'foul capture', as with other metal mole traps, of the present day.
