  1. On the Canal today, these two had a bust up over breadcrumbs, while it was happening the other "girls" ate all the food! Dawn. The winner!
  2. Dawn, You are a lucky, lucky girl!! I know, very priviledged. ill try to get some photos of them when they are in large numbers on the feeders.
  3. LOVELY pup, can really see the Saluki, best of luck with him. Dawn.
  4. Goldfinches are in flocks at the moment, I counted 18 on 4 feeders in our orchard on Saturday, and the Cats being there dont make a dying bit of difference, although they are behind bars!! Nyger seeds are fine, but also Sunflower hearts, they love them, you will get lots of other species too, if you feed hearts. We get Blue, great, Coal, Willow Tits, Green, Gold Finches. Nuthatch, Woodpecker, Siskin etc all feeding on the hearts. Good luck encouraging the birds they are a delight to watch and hear. Dawn.
  5. Nice puppies there. I know what you mean about the price, its a shame that many are poor quality bred purely for the colour and the money!
  6. Some chocolate and fox red yellow working Labs at stud, with all relevant health tests. http://www.champdogs.co.uk/stud-dog/6809.html http://www.breedersonline.co.uk/dog-stud.asp?studid=438x4 http://www.breedersonline.co.uk/dog-stud.asp?studid=438x3 http://www.breedersonline.co.uk/dog-stud.asp?studid=438x1 This kennel is responsible for a couple of the dogs above, TRUE gundogs of ALL colours. http://www.threevalleysgundogs.co.uk/
  7. K9wpg and Dogga. Fair comment, both of you. When I first started working with dogs, 20yrs ago, I worked at a show Labrador kennel. Their very first Lab was a "should of been culled" chocolate, some 60 odd years ago. He was working bred and he was literally "saved" as he would of been culled ifn they hadnt expressed the fact they were not concerned with colour. The breeder, a gamekeeper said chocs were no good as they were not an allowed colour, he offered no other explanation for killing choc puppies. What I am tryin to say, is there is no difference in a choc Labs ability, just t
  8. MMmmm you need to be very careful when breeding for chocolate. NEVER ever use a yellow to produce chocolate, NO responsible breeder will do this. Resulting chocs will have poor pigment and eye colour and the yellows will have brown/pale pigment and pale eyes. blacks of course can only have black pigment, but their eyes are often pale. To breed good chocs, use black to black breeding with both parents carrying choc, then outcross to a choc from time to time, never introduce yellow to a choclate breeding program. Thats a lovely fella in the pic, typifies the breed.
  9. See I dont agree with that The BIGGEST percentage of Labs bred are black, then yellow, then chocolate. So, it stands to reason that blacks will be more popular for any work really. Chocolates were frowned upon years ago and were culled just because they were chocolate, if they were used as much then, I expect you would see them working in stronger numbers now. Dawn.
  10. How stupid, what possible difference could the colour make to him carrying something? There are plenty of chocolate stud dogs, its just that years ago the chocs were not seen as an acceptable colour, thats why they were culled, no ther reason, colour alone. Some people think they arent as good as the blacks or yellows, yet these are the so called "good trainers" that will never give them a chance. I rehomed 2 choc Labs to the prison service, one general drugs dog and one passive detection dog, and one to the police as a drugs and explosive sniffer. No difference in their working abilities
  11. I think a minimum of say 30 posts or so, BEFORE they are allowed to advertise litters for sale. also, a maximum of 2 litters per year, PLUS a mimimum £5 donation towards the running of the site EACH time they advertise.
  12. It shouldnt alter his hunting ability at all, I doubt it would stop the fighting unless its due to him being oversexed and his frustration starts the arguing. It would stop him bonking everything. If you are considering this, I would reccommend you ask your Vet about a Tardak injection. Its a chemical castration and will last for 4-6 weeks, after which the dog will return to normal. You can see if you like the effects neutering will have, and go for the permanent option if you choose, but if you do not like the effects your dog will be back to how he was. Dawn.
  13. There are benefits to having males and females neutered in certain circumstances, for example: A bitch having serious phantom pregnancies, getting milk, becoming moody, uninterested and depressed. A bitch that gets a Pyometra or mammary tumours consistent with phantoms, will not get any of those if she is spayed, BUT, if she is ok with her seasons, and you have no problem with it, I cant see any reason to spay? I certainly would if phantoms etc.. made her unwell, but not otherwise. Males, cant see any real health benefits at all. Will stop bonking, but so will a clip round the ear!! T
  14. Looking through pics, I have shot around 22 and the dogs have accounted for 16 (shot and retrieved of course) My boss must have shot about 15/20 too. Numbers this year.
  15. Best of luck with him, hope he comes through for you. Dawn.
  16. Jeff was a smashing bloke, my friend knew him very well. He worked KC registered show champion Borders too!
  17. That looks excellent!! Vets did a great job! Best of luck. Dawn.

  19. Beautiful Gecko and lovely Snake! Mine eats much smaller stuff, the biggest would be a pinkie mouse!c
  20. Those are very severe on that link, I reckon it is, unless there is a tumour underneath it, my opinion only, if it were my dog, Id try to keep it dry, bandage it and use something like intrasite gel on it, see if it improves, if not Id take her to see what the Vet thinks. best of luck Frank. Dawn.
  21. Looks like a lick granuloma. They dont heal because the dog licks them, the skin gets tough and hard and it never heals properly. You can try putting bitter apple or similar on it, but if it gets wet, same thing will happen, it will get wet and the dog will lick it. they are a nightmare to get rid of. dawn.
