I beg to differ on that front Rake. I put my collie on it when i first got him as it was recommended by folk as he needed something to give him the energy to keep up etc. I think in the year I fed him it I was at the vets every othe rmonth with him for one reason or another. The contents are listed as: Dried Chicken and Turkey (>24%), wheat, maize, animal fat, sorghum, barley, dried beet pulp (>2.5%), chicken digest, dried whole egg, potassium chloride, fish oil, sodium chloride, sodium hexametaphosphate, calcium carbonate, linseed, fructooligosaccharides (0.15%). Balancing Meat With Complete...
hutch6 replied to Gaz_1989's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Can anyone tell me a factual reason why a dog needs, what in a human diet would be, carbs? We use carbs as a fast burning energy source but we also use the sugars created in our livers first. A dog's physiology is totally different to ours and how they get their energy is totally different. Cereals and grains, that we class as carbs, are only used in complete dry foods as they are a cheap filler, to make bigger bags or portions nothing else, they do fudge all to your dog other than cause no end of issues. -
Hi Blueboy, As Skycat has said it will be down to the daily activity int he household that he is reacting to and you can't start writing a detailed account on here, it's best to get in someone who is a behaviourist. If you were nearer I'd happliy come and have a look see to see what's going on. My recommendation would be a APDT trainer as the issue is happening in the house and is within a family environment i.e where the dog is a pet. There are a few in your area here: http://www.apdt.co.uk/dog-owners/local-dog-trainers/staffordshire They should spend a few hours in the house

I chopped my legs off the other day, couldn't find any socks. Luckily I found my hat though. Do I need to get rid of my collies as they lost their stick yesterday?

Fair enough but it doesn't look good to the lurking anti-brigade if folk make it out like they are after them. Just another nail in the coffin.

Might want to edit your last post to just rabbits

I second that. If it's a food that contains a decent level of grain and cereal fillers chances are it's a gluten allergy.

She's about 18months now. She's never going to be a worker I don't think as I've got too much going on trying to set up a business to put the time in with her individually so she just comes out with the collies for a good romp around. I was thinking yesterday that if you play fetch with yours it would be worth a shot at keeping it on a leash or long line and playign fetch in the field with the sheep as effectively what you are doing or trying to do is show the dog that the sheep don't care about the dog really and aren't very interesting. With a bit of time put in the sheep effectively bec

There is a very good DVD available from Fourteenacre, originally made by our very own 'Moley' on here. Lot's of books on the subject, Amazon is the cheapest place to find them. Thanks for the info Matt T Rat Think I'd rather buy theem from Fourteenacre than Amazon, at least the profit goes to a good cause. -
Antiseptics And Antibacterials
hutch6 replied to Born Hunter's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
With dogs on a raw diet and cuts I just let them lick them as their saliva has an antibacterial quality to it anyway. If it's a large wound just some good old fashioned stitches. -
Give A Dog A Pill? Mark11.

Good post Sandy and I too am very sceptical when it comes to suppliments etc for humans and dogs. Just how much vitamin b12 does our body need in order to remain healthy? How was this found out? Is Vitamin B12 any better at it's job than B31 or a bit of fish? Vitamins and naturally occuring minerals in our bodies can only be digested and used when there are other elements present which is why it's better to eat right and not just have Kentucky Friend Cat every night and take a multivitamin. I can't remember the last time one of my mates had scurvy or rickets through poor diet and they don' -
Have you tried him on a long line? He has a bit more freedom etc but you have control at a distance and can stop him from wandering etc anytime you like? I did it with my collies but playing fetch and controlling the chase of the toy by getting them to stop and then askign them to come away from the toy without collecting it. With the long dog I did with a long line. She's fine around cows and horses but like your's sheep are just the right size for a good old chase. It took ages for her to get the message but she is still being worked on. It is confusing to a dog to convey "You can chase

Hi, A bit of a long post but I'll try and keep it as brief as I can. I've loved fly fishing from an ealry age and this has lead onto helping out with beating and exploring other country sports. I recently got into air rifle shooting with some permission to hone my poor skills and provide some grub for myself and my dogs as well as keepiong pests at bay for the owners. One day I got a call from them asking if I knew anything about mole catching as they had some in their elderly father's garden which is just behind their house. I said I'd certainly see what i could do as it sparked a

How do you tell the difference from the surface between a nest mound and a normal muck mound? Is the nest used everyday for resting up in or is it only used for raising litters? I guess it would be easier to find food if you had numerous runs going off from the chamber but I think my mind is still in the mode of other mammals that choose a nest with one, easily defended entrance.

WTF you on about?? could you please explain as i believe i have missed something What if your pulling 20 + per acre And im sure the land owner would love your working method It's quite simple. If I am catching 20 mole an acre then I will charge £15 everytime I work that acre. If it's a thursday or the second tuesday of the month I will work an acre where there aren't any moles as it's an easy day and I still make a tenner. If I manage to catch a mole a mole int eh acre where there weren't any then I will not charge for a mole in the acre as there wasn't supposed to be one.

right then bright spark she has had 1 litter that i know of about 13 - 14 years ago out of a Schipperkee bitch which she kept a pup out of that is still going strong now (at around 12 years old) never been breed from, then 6 years ago she bought a staff of a friend of hers (last of the litter and her daughter fell in love with her). 6 years old and never been breed from. then around 3 years ago she bought the GSD, and has decide yeah she'd like a pup out of her. by far someone you'd call a peddler and i really doubt she's adding much to the dog home the fact she's had a massive 1 litter in app

A prolific show winner and she is asking if anyone knows of a decent stud dog? Of course she's a proven show winner sunshine as she alrerady knows the lines she looking to get into, doesn't take too much grey matter to put two and two together. Dufus.

LB you need to work on your freehand circle drawing I've never got on with the tunnel ttraps after being handed one, fiddling about with it and saying "How does this work then?" just as it slammed on my fingers. If I was a mole and got spanked by one I would be staying well away.
-
I'm a bit of a novice with moles etc but I would assume that if the mole run has leaves in it then the run is not in use. I would have thought a mole would nest up like any other animal does in a dead end so there is only one entrance to defend, in a run there would be two ways to defend and not very safe if you have little ones or want to et your head down for a bit.
-
If it's an acre with a mole in I charge £15. If it's an acre without any moles in at all I charge £10. Try to only work acres where there aren't any moles as the work's easier.

Great. More unwanted GSDs in rescue with major health issues which if they're lucky will mean a shortened life instead of one wasted behind perspex or bars. Can't wait for her's to have pups now. Is she short of cash? Can she just beg and borrow instead? Does she want a cute puppy to keep back for herself now her's is all grown up? Why doesn't she just contact one of the multitude of GSD rescue centres around the country who have unwanted puppies and dogs crammed into here, there and everywhere and still need more space to deal with the daily influx of unwanted dogs. Do her, the dog a
