My ferrets are on meat!! (Thanks Rainmaker)
Ratreeper replied to Hob&Jill's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
:11: i am not the grimreeper of the petshop, i buy them frozen from the same places i get the quail and rats for my hawk. -
how old are they? Are they just enthusiastically playing or is it fear biting? Might just be a phase or you just need to spend more time with them. Try feeding them when you handle them if they are really bad, i used ferretvite paste then pick them up when they are distracted. I have tamed some trully evil b*****ds they all turn around with a bit of patience. Or invest in a pair of good gloves :11:

glad your feeding meat i wouldn't give them anything else. Don't just stick to one though give them a variety with rabbit being the staple and natural diet. I give mine anything i shoot and any scraps from the hawk. So there diet includes, quail, rabbit, rat, mice, gerbils, pigeon, sometimes hare, moorhen, pheasant, partridge, duck, day old chicks, beef, chicken. Its all excellent food for them if fed raw and fresh. if you can shoot one handed :11: (or get a mate to help ) -
look at the photo its young hare mate

not of the rats i was too busy, hopefully the leveret photo worked though. The leveret is being eaten as i type by my hawk, i only hunt to feed my hawk or ferrets so i don't think its wrong to take what i can.

the farm wasn't as productive as usual, no pigeons or anything about on the barns so i decided to mooch around the fields which has never been more than exercise in the past. But as i was sneaking down one hedgerow a leveret stepped out about 30 yards in front of me so i froze. It looked around suspiciously and didn't seem to know i was there at all which was odd since the wind wasn't entirely on my side. Anyway i decided i could risk getting a bit closer so i got to about 22yards and took aim. I hit it just a bit lower than i wanted under its ear but it knocked it over cleanly. I left it on t

I picked up 3 new gills on tuesday from metlon mowbray and today took them out for the first time to see how they are. 2/3 seem pretty tame but one had to stay at home it was too nippy for now. I took my new air rifle out for the first time too (falcon lighthunter 8W) and about 15 nets. I set off at first light and the first opportunity came along for the rifle down the footpath and i got a cracking headshot on a pigeon 25yards away. I was happy but i was searched for that pigeon for 10 mins and it was nowhere. I jumped back on the path and my adrenaline kicked in straight away, what looke

i found it searching for different hunting words to see what i could find. Why the f**k would she get such a pure working dog, killer and warrior dance around a ring? Sorry for going off thread

f*****g forums aye :11: Thanks for the replies before things went off track. I reckon my answer will be use common sense and get out there and see for myself some more hunting of all types before i commit to my own dog. Just going to take my time and try and learn from some good lads but its looking like they might be hard to find . But then i can have an educatated opinion as it looks like opinion plays a big part in the dog world on every little thing, its probably what makes all hunting so addictive and you can't stop

Alright i am new to dogs but i am as keen as hell. I can't get any dogs for a few years max but i am doing all my research and hopefully getting out with a few mates so i can make a good choice. Anyway i want a dog as a good ferreting companion but mostly lamping. My first thoughts were a small lurcher with some collie in? But as i just said i know f**k all. However before the ban what would people consider the minimum size for a dog to take fox? Not to kill outright just hold it until a bull type gets there. Blair has tried to stop young lads like me enjoying field sports but i can still

nice one, and the ferrets will love it gutted or not and if you do get a mixy it won't do them any harm so don't worry about it. But if you've never done it before then gut it anyway

dandyman i agree rapids are amazing. My first rifle was a rapid mk1 and one of the first made lol. I sold it not long ago. Anyway i picked up my new gun, i checked out the s200 and bsa and a few others but i went for my original idea in the end Its a crakcing little gun and i have heard good things. However i can't fill the f****r so i am off shooting later so i have 25-30 shots which to be honest is more than i will need. I am really happy with it and it will be perfect for shooting from a car. I will get some shooting done with it though before i talk it up too much. I will go an -
I am swapping in a rifle i am not happy with tomorrow at the shop i got it from so i will have £500 budget. I need something light, short and silent as possible. Good for shooting from a car and being inconspicuous  I was thinking either the Lighthunter-8W or the slightly bigger and multi-shot Lighthunter-12W Only issue i have with these small rifles are shot capacity, .22 only gives 25-30 shots in the 8w... Are these good choices? can anyone think of anything better? Cheers for any feedback i will make a new thread tomorrow with what i get if all goes well and then i wil

you don't need any license for a crossbow either, would be good for deer if it was legal

I agree borders are great they would be my second choice but i will stick to my first instinct and get a patterdale i just love them. I have to disagree with you Kane i think thats a bad way to think but i see where your coming from, i wouldn't want to see a good dog go to waste. However this dog might get a lot more action than i thought so i need to keep my options open. I have seen a lot advertised so how can i sort the wheat from the chaff? Is there much written about the different bloodlines of pats i can read? thanks for the replies
-
i want a pat but i have seen more pat crosses advertised so i thought i would ask incase theres something i should know. Yep good lines are good lines i just want to make sure thats where mine comes from, not from some that shouldn't of been bred but thats just my opinion. cheers for the reply

I am almost certain i want a patterdale, something thats going to be a determined little ratter but also small and tough enough for anything else i might come across. I have heard bad things about working them with ferrets though or was this just a case of not introducing the pup young enough? This is my only worry but i am also interested about what people think about patterdale crosses, like jack russelXpatterdale would that suit my mostly ratting hunting better do you think? Any pics would be great. One last thing is who to buy off, i hope they are still bred pure and culled as necessary
