when i first starting ferreting i used to to just take them out and put the collars on, used to struggle getting them on and then they would just f**k about all the time instead of working, i now put collars on any youngster i have as soon as i get them, part of day to day handling is putting the collar on and letting them run round with it on.. also put nets over tubes to stop them playing with the nets when out ferreting.. makes life so much easier when your out in the field if the ferret has experienced these few little things before hand..

look what my pup has to put up with the kids
moocherboi replied to fast dogs's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
haha, i think most dogs ends up getting dressed up, and thnk they rather enjoy all the attention, i have come home to see my dog in full outfits that the girlfirend and her sister have put on him, i have also have my dog out lamping with bright red nail varnish that they decided to put on one day, was a real pain as i kept thnking it was blood when i checked his feet after each run. but hey its all abit of fun and like i said the dog enjoys all the fuss and attention he can get -
Im working warrens around 50 holes + most the time, some of them very deep as i have noticed sometimes i cant pick the ferrets up on collars. I have four jills and work them all but i just started to think i may need couple more for when im ferreting the next day, like to work enough ferrets to get things moving below ground and stop just the 1 or 2 ferrets getting the run around below...

When out ferreting im shattered once im done and back home, now when i think that my ferrets are working away, running around underground. they must get tired obviously but still work in a manner, now im using 4 ferrets most the time but if i go out the next day and use the same 4 i dont think they work as well. does anyone else rotate there ferrets when working so constantly have fresh ferrets on the job, i no people use the same ferrets all day but im sure they wont be working as hard as what they would do in first hour.

choosing the right cross for me, first lurcher
moocherboi replied to Jamo's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
great advise, sometimes i think people dont take in to account the type of ground they will be running on. buy a lurcher they think should do a job but it struggles in the field. e.g getting a big lurcher yet running in small fields. -
Just wondering what other airgunners use in their HW100 .22 , i have had mine for some time now and not really used it been a waste really but took it out saturday lamping and i got the chance to realise what a lovely gun it is, seems very accurate but just thought i would see what the most common best suited pellet for this air rifle is and also what distance you shooting at. kind regards james

dogmagic, first of all thank you for replying to my post. i will keep that as an option as im open minded on the cross, give or take.. does not have to be straight cross collie grey saluki grey. but want something along those lines. like to hear that you would wnt to keep a pup back too, always gives me bit more confidence in the breeding. where abouts are you? can pm if wish.

Was out walking the dog this eveing to see loads of timber outside the front of someones house. i went back to ask if they were throwing it away, turned out they were so i asked if i could have a look and if wanted anything could i take it... they were more than happy for me to do so. in this pile was a large ship lap shed..but no floor. old rabbit hutch which had seen better days so left that. also there was an old dog kennel that the floor was rotten in. so i have taken floor off and will replace with other pieces of recycled wood i claimed. plan is to make new ferret hutch out of it. it is

At first i was thinking game on as i was only out generally exercising him and playing. and was enjoying the run until it edged closer to the road. At one point i thought he had it and i was then worried about other dog walkers turning up as the normally do just after work but. but once he was out of site and gone through the hedge there was nothing to enjoy then. you just start thinking the worst... but i could see cars going down the road over the hedge and all the time they were still moving i was hoping that was a good sign my dog was ok.. if one stopped on herd breaking then i would of kn

Was out this afternoon taking the dog for a walk, over some nice flat open ground with a tennis racket and ball to have a real good play and run while the sun was shining after all the rain we had today. as i was walking the field i was just about to hit the tennis ball again for the dog when a hare jumped up out of its seat, was good distance off from us both too, but the dog soon was after that istead of the tennis ball. now this field i was on is close to a road but is of a large size to take dogs for a walk, and never have i come across a hare or rabbit, there used to be loads apparen

who uses plastic or fibre glass boxes? they seem a good idea being easy to maintain and light weight but was worried they could get either too cold or too hot more importantly... anyones views on these would be much appriciated. regards

i had a snipped hob before and he was worth his weight in gold when you got loads of jills to cover and bring out of season. no trouble to keep and i dont mind working a hob either. but thank you for your response

one of the lads i work with decided to get ferrets last year and has now realised he has not got time for them and had been neglecting them a bit. so after feeling sorry for them i took them off him and now trying find new homes. since having the hob i have fed him well on flesh and he looks very well. so im offering a hob to someone who wishes to give it a good home. based in suffolk and leicestershire. can possible sort someone out a hutch too if need be. regards
