how accurate are you with a spring airgun?
Sterry replied to ferreterwithnets's topic in Airgun Hunting
Horses for Courses my friend. No doubt starting off with a springer gives you good technique (breathing and gettin a good shot (no silencer on the springer and pretty noisy)) PCP are easier to shoot in my veiws so well done to those who get good results with a springer -

i know i can hit a skeet clay with a springer at around 40 yards but that may just be a glanceing blow so i would say bout 2" to be on the modest side. thats with a RWS 45 with a 3-9X40AO nikko stirling mildot. the gun has a boat load of recoil, much prefer my PCP but still good lil fun/back-up/rat gun -
I'll speak to my Science teacher..hes got a PHD in Physics. lets hope he can shine a light on this predicament.

You can just about make out where somethings been over the top and the corn seems to be in a shape that would fit in a tunnel. Would this sort of trap be ok for stoats and mink??
-
i didnt mean to moan if that comment was directed at me, i know what dogs are like. Try telling my dog to leave the squirrels alone...hes a pointer.

I personally would have thought that the government would be all in favour of gettin rid of grey squirrels being such a pest. But i dont make the laws, and i dont condone anyone who breaks the law, its just bad press for our sport

That was my first impression as soon as i set my hand upon the oiled walnut stock. the guy i got it from used it for shooting cans at the end of a 30ft ggarden crazy!
-
I brought this gun second hand but it was absolutly mint. i havent been able to find any info on it or reveiws, dont get me wrong it does the job (head shot rabbit 60yrds) just interested in other owners veiws. from what im guessing is that its abit of a mix and match of other rifles.

Basic snare construction
Sterry replied to Pigeon Controller's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I've made fox snares out of bike brake cable and some copper pipe crimped to make a loop, i refused to travel miles for one spool of snare wire or pay over the odds, seems to work, just wont last that long wouldnt think. -
Just a possibilty but....In a PCP the pressure is a steadily increase (steady in comparison) where as a springer has a almost sudden build up of pressure. Maybe the reason why larger calibre rifle use dual charges for more effiecient pressure. just a thought

would i be right in thinking that ft/lbs is a measure of power, in the sence that it is related to both weight and speed of pellet, because if it is it will be MASS X VELOCITY. if a rifle is capable of only one power, surley it wont matter how much the pellet weighs and would produce the same ft/lbs. if not i need to relook at my physics (never that great at that) and please excuse my ramblings

Well said, entirly the right stance on the matter. Glad such measures will be taken to protect our sport for the vast majority who practise it.

Im 17 mate, dont get me wrong i only done it a couple of times under strickt supervision of someone in the know. its just i felt its a handy skill to have, and im all to aware of how things can and do cock up. i've been offered work on my down time lookin after a farm and woodland. soooo.... -
about to get my .22lr and wondering what one of my scope i should put on it, one gamekeeper told me something like a 4x32 is best,i've got one, but i was think bout puttin a 3-9x50IR on it, failing that i've also got a 3-9x40AO, that i could dig out. which would be best in you guys opinions???

I've spoken to my sisters boyfriend whos a policeman, as i was worried about gettin caught with a perfectly legitamate tool. He said that the limit is 3" (thats the blade) and thats perfect for rabbits. he explained that as long as you have a "good reason" to posess a knife any policemen should be understanding to yours cause. but i imagine some coppers are not reasonable so ffor this reason i like to carry my SGC,BASC insurance details, and permission to hunt/shoot letters, in this case there could be no questions about my motive of carrying a knife.

.22lr and a .223 on a first grant?
Sterry replied to Sterry's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
None of my family hold a FAC so would it be legal for the mentor to be the farmer on whose land i'll be shooting with? Fox wont be a problem he hates the blighters but deer i dont know anyone with them on their ticket, maybe i'll get a variation for that bit later on. -
Im about to apply for my first FAC in febuary shortly after im 17 (cant wait ). initially i was just goin to get a .22lr and when i get few more quid in the bank get a dedicated fox and muntjac rifle. i also didnt want to(lacking a better phrase) push my luck with the FCO, considering my age. i have a fair bit of land for the .22lr and a few bits for a .223 (one i know is cleared for .223). Any opinions on the matter whether to get the variation for the .223 and .22lr when i apply for a grant or wait 18 months or so before gettin the variation?
-
I dont fancy ending up in court for the police force's inconsistancies. i was going to apply for just a .22lr in febuary (when im 17) and apply for a .223 a year or so later when i have a bit of doe and so not to be asking too much from the FEO as im aware that he must watch his own back when licensing even more so when the applicant is just 17. would you think i would stand a good chance of gettin a variation for both? i have land that has been cleared up to .223 thanks

Dont worry mate. im new to this game and need all the help people are willing to throw my way.
-
Oh definatly, im gunna put down ground game and vermin. my understanding is that fox comes under vermin, if not we'll just change that on the interveiw

Dont worry bout tryin to scare me...i nearly shit myself when the tree started going. and the guy that was showing me was all to aware of the dangers and made damn sure i knew as well, quite rightly too, they are some scary peices of shit those chainsaws. -
i've got a few scope that i use/used on my air rifles, the one i was planning to switch on to a .22lr is the 4-12X50IR mil dot hawke night eye or a niko stirling 3-9X40AO mil dot. i am think in of the Hawke more so than the niko because my new rimmy will take over from my air rifle in the majority of the time. what you think??

A few years ago i found a purse net on a shoot so picked it up. It has a thick woolen draw cord and although im pretty sure the actual net material is nylon, it has a almost waxed feel to it and it rarely gets tangled as much as the other nylon. i would love to find out what the stuff is on it....i would treat all my nets with it.

Blimey... would never have even thought about takin a shot that far with any .22lr. i'll get down the falm and practice at varying distances if i can hit a clay at that far consistantly that'll do for me. i'll have a look at SAK cheers:D
