looking at getting into stalking

I am looking for an air rifle for my dad to use when he visits me. I wanted something like an AA Pro sport but what else is there in either under lever or break barrel which is more like the carbine style. Really want a lighter gun if possible, dont want pre charged and want something that can be uprated to FAc if required and on that note would you say .177 sub FAC and .22 if FAC? ATB PETE

I used to have a border as a kid, that required stripping aswell. I just used to do it by hand facing the dog away and starting on the scruff just pinching the tips of the hairs and pulling them out. Dog didnt complain much unless you got to bigger tuff, then he would give the evil eye, used to get carrier bag full. They look top dollar when done.

There are situation when you should not use your gun, for example the deer may be on flint ground or tarmac, you wouldnt want a high velocity bullet coming back at you. Also the deer may be in someones garden and who carries there gun on them at all times, you might pass a deer RTC on your way to work for example. There is nothing wrong with using a knife if it is needed.

Check your house insurance, they should be on that if you break them in you home.

looking at getting into stalking

Your lucky not to get any conditions on your ticket such as mentoring, even-so I would if I were in your shoes go for a few stalks with an good stalker who respects the quarry and is safe. You will learn alot if he or she knows there stuff. ATB Pete -
Thats exactly why I only use Soft points (pro hunters for roe and munti or soft point partitions for larger deer) I know if they make contact they will punch straight into the deer ,expand and go out the other side leaving a hole and a blood trail. Your in a world of hurt if the poor deer runs off.

Hi and in reply to your question. I would go on a course for it will teach you a hell of alot about the deer. There are other aspects such as shooting saftey and meat hygiene all of which will be of benifit to you. You will hear folk say the courses are no use and you wont learn anything, but seems the folk I have met have never done a course so hard to see how they would know that. Yes they are expensive and yes it can be a pain to do them, but the way things go in this world ..how long till they are mandatory? If they become so you can bet the price rockets. At present the only way you can -
I understand what your saying Dan but the bullet I am pretty sure is a varnit round, hence why you use it for fox, the bullet is highly explosive (as described by Hornady on their site ) which means it isnt intended to act as a soft point or other deer bullet would do, that is controlled expansion.I use the same bullet on fox from time to time and it makes a mess of them, the reason why is it is designed to blow apart and cause maximum trauma. If you hit a deer with one in the wrong place it has the potential to cause injury to the deer. For example with Muntjac it would start to expand to soo

I have never heard of such a test and if there were would you really want to use it? If you did you would be making more of a contamination problem as if you suspected TB you should keep the spread of contamination to a minimum. Also what good or use would the test be? If you suspect then you call DEFRA or health agency.I wonder if a powder did exist would it spread contamination...as a powder would be blown by the wind? Regarding samples , no you do not send away a sample. A sample must be taken by a specialist from one of the agencies sent to investigate and the sample held in the correc

If I am not mistaken thats a varmit head, check on the manufactures site. If it is it not suitable, I have a friend who tried the same round on a Roe, he got away with it a couple of times then he didnt. He hit a Roe in the chest and it ran off at speed. He found it 2 days later with a dog, the bullet had shatter on impact causing a large but shallow wound, it was fly blown and full of maggaots, he wa not happy with himself for he felt extremely bad about the sheer misery he had caused the deer. He now will not use the same bullet or any other of the wrong construction, he made a mistake and a

looks like a bit of confusion here but I will let you know my view. Ok yes you can and cant shoot birds. Its pretty clear if they are a protected bird you cant. If such as a crow or woody then yes you can.....but like someone said if its rented are you allowed to shoot them, or indeed have a gun on the proerty? You dont need the shooting rights to shoot a bird if you are allowed, as I am pretty sure a house unless its on a large chunk of land with access to shooting wouldnt have such rights. Regarding the centre of road, path bit etc....a road, path or bridle way etc are all included as

please can I come and shoot you????
chickenman replied to hollie.vincent87's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Philip 140....you have no need to apologise for you words and gents I really do feel you shouldnt be saying he has a sense of humour failure etc. the young lady in question has come here to ask for help, she has been polite and has respected this forum, its members and the sports associated with it. We all know only too well that our pastimes are vilified by some, mainly those who know little of the countryside and its issues. You can bet you wages that some of those folk will view these forums.....all you will do is feed them them what they want, they will see bigotted sexist people. Like I s -
Remember to centre the turrets first, count how many clicks there are then half, gets you the centre. Then mount the scope loosely and bore sight( do a search) you may need to shim the scope with VERY thin slivers of plastic, negatives are good for this. Once its pretty near to zero by eye..(looking through the bore )....then you can use the turrets to fine tune. Then take it shooting and do a final zero. This way you will not put excessive strain on the scope and will have lots of free play on the turrets as sometimes you will run out of 'play' on the turrets with cheaper scopes.

I would think that you would be better applying for .17hmr as FEOs will be more inclined to issue that over .22 due to the fact .17hmr break up on impact where as .22 as renowed for whizzing of every now and again when the deform. I know alot of guys who stalk deer who rate them more dangerous in that respect than their deer rifles. I would also go for 6.5x55 as it will drop all uk deer with ease, with the right load and with minimal meat damage. With regards to what you get issued , well thats a case of what police force governs you, the FEO and your mentor. I was granted .17HMR,177 FAC ai

I am looking for a dog to use for follow up of shot and wounded deer when I go stalking, the breed I was looking at was a Black Lab. but after some research I have found that one of my favourite dogs, Border Terrier is actually used extentsively in Sweden for deer follow up. Do any of you know of anyone who has trained one for this work in the uk? or do any of you know of any breeders in Dorset,Hants or Wiltshire please? Pete

Used this technique this weekend on Red Deer calf to good effect. Knife has to be at least 6" long though, which is illegal...that's the problem methinks ;-) Just picked this bit up from the thread, just to let you know a 6 inch knife isnt illegal, for it to be illegal it would have to be on the prohibited items list...You are safe to use a six inch knife when stalking as you are using it for that purpose, even if you forgot and left it in you pocket to pop into the paper shop and were stpped by the police you still have a very good defence that you were stalking forgot to take it out o

I have the smae rifle, though cut down by 3 or 4 inch..its superb for accuracy and I use a PES T12..wont rust, wont burn through like Aluminium and very quite..when you do choose a mod....dont leave it ob the rifle...take it off after use or the acidic condensate will eat into you barrell or crown in days.
