  1. Good work Tomo! Did those little rattlers get them out for you? (You cannot have all of the dales by the way, thats just greedy!)
  2. Maybee it's they don't have the same pace as other base dogs, this could take a few more crosses to get them up to speed. Reply to the first question by the way!
  3. Nothing like that yet, suppose one of those could do some damage to a jill with the talons!
  4. Thanks lad. is it possible to get small hobs? I have a couple of small to medium hobs, brothers. These are just as game as the bigger hobs with just as much fire, but more get away from these 2. They take the knocks well, stick at it till the end, but more definatley get away from these 2 than the larger hobs. It's just a bugger when you breakthrough, and they dragged along the tube 2 ft!
  5. Only ever done a couple of digs, and those were shallow digs. but liking these stories, wish i'd have followed it a bit more, missed my way a little I think. Keep them coming lads!
  6. Looks a tricky spot for the quickset! Well done lads!
  7. Never thought about it at the time but Strong stuff would probably magic some up if you gave him a shout!
  8. I've never had one come to any grief yet by leaving it in heat, but I can imagine the chance of infection is higher the longer they are in heat. They usually get bred every other year as well.
  9. Should have got your hand in the tube around the bend and 'drawn it out'!
  10. Had to replace the leather on a mk1 collar, got a new leather ferret collar of fleabay for £2. This the old one before tampering with. Cut out the fused middle bit with a jnr hacksaw blade. The leather then slides out then. Slid in the new collar, cut a piece of hard plastic and fused it back in with a hot knife. (don't do this at home kids, but i suspect you'll know more about hotknife's than most adults!) Bit of a mess, so dressed it up with some sandpaper. Collar as good as new and ready to go!
  11. Also our dogs will tell us if there is still rabbits left in, usually pinpointing the nearest hole, and yes i'll stay till I get it and have cleared the warren. I'm 36 now, and was first out at the age of 4 yrs old, back then and for many years after we used to ferret the traditional way, jills to bolt, netting up in silence, standing way back from the holes on the blind downwind side.(They still get the scent when you are netting up though.) quietly picking up bolters in the nets. (Used to get a rollicking if you spoke!) I'll still do it on the deeper lowland warrens. I have fieldcraft from
  12. Well Tiercel, if you have never dug to rabbits pal you probably won't see them stuck behind a kill in a stop end that has gone stiff will you? This is probably where you so called fieldcraft ends, above ground. The blocking in happens when you have a rabbit with it's arse up, face to the wall of the stop end, the ferret after trying hard gets past to the head end, but is now on the stopend side of the rabbit but making a kill. If this kill stiffens up, in the tube it may take days for the ferret to eat it's way out, thats not if the air supply does not run out, these take some pulling out o
  13. Thats a lot of ferrets! Started to make me wonder how many are in the country now!
  14. It's all horses for courses to be honest, I use mainly hobs, and have to dig quite a lot, but have got a few jills for the deeper warrens where it's not practical to be digging six footers out every time. (Most of my work is shallowish warrens to be honest though.) A strong hob willl kill quick, and usually don't get dragged around the warren whilst doing it, some jills are of the same mindset, but usually take longer to finish the job off, and sometimes get dragged around a bit whilst doing it. Nothing worse than having to dig 2 or 3 times to the same rabbit.
  15. Cheers for the reading lads, looks like there's a bit been going on, and a fair bit going to happen this weekend! Victor what is like for the flies getting on your rabbits in those temps over there?
  16. If there's no need, then don't breed!
  17. Somebody's going to have to go out before saturday, don't make me do it, the rabbits are sick of the sight of me!
