Funny you should say that Alimac apparently a horse went through one of the shop windows there this morning! Good turnout this morning, shame few more don't go out more regularly, nee man at the kennels is showing some good sport!

No idea what you mean wilf! I only looked at the thread because I wanted to hear about a mythical moody keeper!

Interesting thread this! As has already been said the keeper having a go at the guns is a massive no no and I'm inclined to agree with gonetoearth that there are plenty of "keepers" who have got no idea about proper shootday etiquette but maybe I was just schooled better than some. However labtastic raises some good points! I would want to have seen it to pass a full judgement on what went on. There are few things more frustrating than trying your best on a crappy day and watching decent enough birds going through without be shot at and then when the guns decide a high enough bird is

Depends where you are in the country, east Anglia it is already endemic and there's bugger all can be done although that won't be officially admitted yet. My boss has planted nearly million trees in last 15 years, probably about 30% ash if not more. I haven't seen a plantation on here that hasn't got it.

Wet weather and wild broods
lilvixen replied to Rhodey's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Is anyone else seeing late broods? On the concrete farm drive just up from my house I've seen 5 small broods of redlegs aged between 1 and 3 weeks and 2 hen birds with 2 chicks each of similar age. They've got 2nd year kale one side of drive and standing wheat the other, seems to be doing them well! Also saw on sunday a redleg on the park with 5 chicks that were no more than 48 hours old. There's a Mallard on one of our ponds with very young ducklings as well. -
My beat keeper has handed in notice and will more than likely move up current trainee (been with us 2 and half years). If finances stack up will be looking for new trainee. This is not a position for someone who isn't 100% committed. Would prefer someone wanting to do nvq, not great money, caravan accommodation and you have to put up with me! However if you want to learn this is a good place to start! 5000 acre estate pheasant, partridge, duck all reared from day old plus deer work. Suffolk. Send me a pm if interested remember 1st impressions count!

Some crops went in on our heavy ground only last week but then our neighbours had to re drill 150 acres fodder maize at same time because it had rotted in ground! Covered everything in slug pellets and it's just starting to show fingers crossed. Just hope it grows can't afford to have 60 acres fail!

There are two big factors that will catch you out in this weather. First is poor quality, badly reared birds that won't stand any weather on there backs. Second and it sounds like moo is heading in right direction is the release pens. Small dark wet pens spells trouble. Make sure there is plenty of room, and somewhere they can dry out when it does stop raining. If those two are right and you're half decent stockman get them out, soon go back quickly on rearing field. As for me, mine still young enough to go back in shed when it rains!

Thanks Caprelous Don't I know it Foxdropper, but sadly that's not how my boss works. I've got metal seats but he wants something he can show off to his mates!

My boss recently visited Poland to look at forestry and saw what he described as "wooden machine gun turrets!" I am assuming he is talking about the free standing boxes you see on continental boar and deer shoots. He would like a couple in our woods now (with thatched roofs!). I neither have the time or the inclination to build them so my question is; does anybody know of anyone who builds them? I would assume they are easier to build on site but if anyone has got any good ideas im listening!

Came in from work about half 4 and my daughters were watching CBBC It was something about food and they showed pheasant in the feather and rabbit in the fur and then got the children to taste some. Then the presenter went stalking where a fallow buck was shot and the children then tried venison. Obviously not too much was shown and i'm not the biggest fan of the BBC but I can only applaud them for this and lets hope we see more of this in the future!

Sammc and any one else with eye problems in their dogs have a look at primary lens luxation (PLL) best place for info is the Animal health trust (AHT). You might find it's not Glaucoma. There has been a genetic test developed for PLL which includes "patterdale terriers" so they must have seen cases. I haven't got time to go into it now and the test is not cheap but can help with future breeding.

Sorry to hear that, RIP Sadly there are several strains of lepto and they are not all covered by the jab.

I think wilf is talking more about fox driving/bolting etc rather than a formal shoot day and obviously in the days when it was legal. Dogs can have (did have) a use but I still wouldn't use that to justify an applicant for a job having a lurcher. I would rather call on a fully paid up messer such as the aforementioned poster!
-
Oh I dont really agree with that, many of the younger keepers in the job are clever enough to realise what a handy tool a good lurcher can be.......do keep up with the times old boy A few realise what a pain in the arse they can be as well!! Have to admit it doesn't do lads many favours when i'm looking to take someone on. Sure there'll be plenty on here who will have something to say about that but maybe i'm old fashioned! You are ya grumpy git How is the banshee settling in?......is he still alive? lol Just been reading the other thread about noise in the beating lin

Sadly FTB it might not work like that. I had a litter of cockers last year had homes for 4 bitches but ended up with 6 dogs, I advertised 2 well bred very well reared pups at less than half the usual going rate but stipulated working homes only. Still struggled for decent homes, some of the muppets who rang up I wouldn't give a stick to let alone a dog. Next time one of my bitches has pups (if at all) unless i've got firm orders from people I know there'll only be one pup in the litter

Graham Brockhurst?
lilvixen replied to Penda's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Could it be Graham Brockhouse? Fits your description of working in midlands and then going to scotland. Think he is/was more of a story teller than a keeper! I'm sure someone might be able to correct me but think he was regularly writing for sporting gun. He was up in Dumfries & Galloway, fairly sure he wasn't full-time keepering, but last I heard he was back in the midlands after splitting up with his partner(a fairly well known artist). -

Lancer no man who thought anything of his tyke whether it be hard ,a sounder ,call out or purple with yellow spots would enter there dog in a spot considered undiggable and for you to say a hard terrier should be used in theses conditions to kill its quarry then come out well lad your just speaking nonsence . Clean spade Im not useing a yard stick to measure two differant ttypes if you look through some of my post s I will always say differant terriers for differant situations I have terriers that are totaly differant types but get more or less the same end result ....but when it comes t -
Really?......how does anyone fail to notice that their child cant read properly or write by nine years old?.....I am not saying teachers are perfect, far from it, but surely something like that anyone would get sorted themselves? I don't think it is a case of not noticing, its more they just don't care. I had some truly eye-opening times when we lived in the Borders a couple of years ago. I had to pay the beaters on the first shoot day of the season, they were meant to fill in a form with their name and address. There would have been about a dozen lads between 16 and 20, nice lads but I

Queen Honours for Hadkeepers
lilvixen replied to Magdon's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Not sure Mr Clark needs reminding just how wonderful he is! Hello again Its good to see Clark getting some recognition. He's a super keeper and well liked by his staff. -
Wilf told me in 18 months time JR is going to begging him and Fellman for there dogs and that will be the last you hear of his famous white dogs!
