dog scratching his ears constantly
toshaugh replied to stick's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Had to go to vets today with same problem, bitch was tearing at her ears, turns out it is earmites, she gave me CANAURAL ear drops to be applied twice a day for seven days. She showed me them, but i could not see them until she got a magnifying glass, tiny little f**kers. Hope your dog gets better. -

How yea doing Aussiewhippet, Injuries sound nasty, what sort of ground you running, mountains? Small grass fields where i am, alot of twisting and turning, but no real rough ground for pad injuries and that, just wondering.

All this bollocks about thin skin really makes me laugh, I have whippets because they suite the ground i hunt on and the quarry i persue. Yes you notice cuts more on a whippet because of there short coat. I was recently down at Banbury at a mates for the weekend i took Vixen my fawn whippet, she hunted the storm bushes for at least 2 hours (something we don't get where i live) and there wasn't a scratch on her although there were plenty of thorns. It wasn't as if she wasn't working either she caught a few. We went lamping too with barbed wire etc and she never got a scratch. Probably just me b

Yep, she'll be provided with all of the above, thanks mally . Another quick question is that i've been told that a whippet will tire out much much quicker than other dogs whilst retrieving, that true?

Cheers northwestmitch, will have a look at that forum, didnt know there was one.

Sorry, worded that wrong, didnt mean to say 20 plus each night she's out, just if a whippet is fully fit, would she have the stamina to catch 20 plus rabbits any night?
-
Hey, i'm looking for some info on Whippet stamina, i done a search on here and got 28 pages of mostly whippet x's. This is my whippet below 19mths old and about to kick in to her 1st serious season, last season was mostly based on training and her best tally was 11 rabbits all retrieved live to hand, i'm excepting a big improvment this year. My question is this, will she have the drive to go 3/4 nights a week and pull in 20 plus rabbits on a good night, i lamp alone, so this is plenty for me to be lugging about. So, have whippet's got stamina, any info from whippet worker's on here.

Even area's in ireland are different, a bloke from the midlands(Longford i think, not sure) came over to get a trial of a dog my da was selling and said the land around Wicklow was to hilly to lamp and dogs would have to be exceptional to succeed and the fields were too small, i dont know as i've never worked my dogs outside Wicklow, suppose you have to put up with the terain available to you.

Cheers for replys,i reckon she'll do the job alright, doing all her commands really well except for retrieving, proving very difficult. but i'll keep at it.

22" mate, anyone willing to take a guess at what height she'll make?
-
This is my 7 month old pup, its deerhound/greyhound-greyhound/bedlington, 22". I bought her cos over the last few seasons, there seems to be more foxes than rabbits about, so will bring her on slowly for 2010 winter.Father is also cracker on hare's. She has chased a few rabbits daytime and is speedy enough for a pup, but this heat is killing her, as it is me. What you's think?
-
Thanks for replys, like i said not a problem, just curious, but as DEKAW says, the smellier the better, there was one that must have being lying there for a couple of weeks and was just pure mush and slime, dog reeked after it.

I have come across 3 foxes over the last month or so (dead foxes), the thing is my 2yr old jack russell proceeds to roll on them, covering herself with a voilent stench, the stink in the van on the way home is rotten, anyway this morning she done it with a badger (also dead). She is a bushing dog and in really good health and i dont think this is a problem but would like to know why she does it, any info would be great. Tom

toshaugh replied to anth hall14's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
22, Bull/Grey, was a good dog to catch rabbits but total bone crusher. -
Its YOUR dog, go and get it , by any means possible, if it were mine i'd have it by now. Do you know exactly where he is, is he tied or loose, you could always steal him back?
-
Any particular way of getting this, i've asked 3 times and never gat a reply from him. i've tried snaring on my own, i'm shit at it.

Hey, I called into my uncle's today after work, he was butchering 2 fat lambs for his friend, and he kindly gave me a bag of chops, 2 livers and 2 heads( heads for dogs), grand i thought and on i went. I pulled into shop to get a pack of smokes and met a man who also keeps a few hounds, we talked for a while and he inquired about the blood on my hands, so i told him th craic and he told me not to give my hounds the sheep heads because it could turn them to chase or attack sheep. Any truth in this, dont want to f**k my dogs up, or is he full of shite. Any comments or advice welcome.
