got quite a reasonable request last night, on my thoughts of the best books to read on STALKING, which got me thinking, that most books, were either fact based manuals on rules regs, seasons, carcas prep etc or were autobiographies of authors time stalking! titles like HOW TO BE A SNEAKY BAST**D ? OR HOW TO TAKE GAME WITH A BOW ! see EXTRA SNEAKY BAST**D. or even HOW TO MAKE A FACE LIKE A TREE? were missing from most bookstores, no one actualy taught me how to stalk, learned by creeping up on rabbits, hares, birds, sheep ! virtually any and everything, i raced and rallied cars from the ag

A remote island, has taken up arms to fend off rabbits, 5 crofters on LEWIS in the western isles have been lincensed to blast the bunny population as it grows out of control, The rampaging rabbits have stripped valuable grazing grounds for livestock in the north isle, warrens have destablised many of the sandy plains, known as "machairs" countryside ranger jullie stevewright said , we fear for the public's safety we are using shooting as the very last resort. but ADVOCATES FOR ANIMALS say the rabbits SHOULD BE REGULATED ? WITHOUT A CULL ???? :icon_eek

THE RULES ah the rules, animals, dont care about ballistics, trajectories, etc. just like deker say"s you"v got to put the shot in the right place ! once, shot one of the BIG NASTIES, 5 times in the chest with a caibre that would stop a transit van? didn"t stop him, later on examination, couldnt find a piece of his heart! someone had forgotten to tell him , that he was dead! just like CAPSTICK say's the only way to stop an animal is to TAKE AWAY HIS CREDIT CARD

THINK IM" TALKING TO A MAN THAT KNOW"S HIS STUFF ? cheers

GOT TO AGREE with remmy on this one, what the bullet police, i like that, have to remember is that all the .22 wildcat centrefires,i,e 222 222mag 223, 22\250 etc were not developed for deer hunting, but for varmint hunting!, will they kill a deer if hit properly,? yes they will. but once again, its a personal choice, i in a professional capacity shot just about all of them! after nearly 40 years at this job i decided that for me, the 243 was the best allrounder, of course many will dispute this, but i remember being at a deer society meeting, 25 years ago, and discussing calibres and shot

VERY STRANGE THIS, on onother post, i stated that i had culled 124 deer in one DAY! and had shot thousands in over the years, and nobody said enything -
GREAT reply and good advice, easier said , than done, when i first replied to this post i could quite easily suggested a shock collar ? but just like mobile phones ! WHAT did we do before we got them ? but i think most owners dont realise that no matter how good your dog retrieves swims or works if he or she runs in out of control, they wont be an asset or welcome on some shoots or company. that is why i said he had to be stopped, having trained dogs of many breeds but mainly spaniels and achieved good results through the years, oh! dont worry i know the old beat the sh*t out of th

Youre right mate , an old wives tale . I ve shot plenty under a full moon. One things for sure you wont shoot any sitting in the house . Which part of the Borders are you from ?? CENTRAL ,where all the good shots live when i was your age i never stayed in the house was out every night. never got tired of it. i live between unkeeperd etates, no matter how many i get the vacuum just fills up.
-
NICE GOIN THERE, just goes to show that you can still lamp under the moon ,kinda was old wives tale, about shooting , i used to think the same , till i went out one night with a neighbouring keeper and we got 4! so with the moon up,tonight we"ll still be going , keep knocking them over. or as dick emery used to say ITS MY DELIGHT ON A SHINY NIGHT ? AND A FOGGY NIGHT AS WELL.
-
NICE SHOT! good shooting, and a great account of your night out ,as you would guess, from my user name im" very interested in long range shooting, as i have stated in a previous post i have a valley which runs between two forests, and i get a lot of foxes travelling from one to other. i will very often take them out to 400 yds in daylight, of course, mindyou iv" done a lot of this type of ambushing. I would never condone long shots at deer! because this is stalking not target shootlng. being impressed by hitting antelope at 1000yds as shown on youtube is in my opinion not cool just imagi

HELLOW ALL this post, was started as a wee wakeup reminder of what it"s like these days. I have nothing but respect for the lads an lassies in blue, i should know, i trained some of them and married one. it still must be a real pain in the bum to attend all these callouts! i supose it"s the times we live in. got a lady , that"s lost all her hens and ducks, to foxes , cant help, to close to the village in the old days would"v sorted it out quite quickly oh well!. cheers
