  1. many of the scotish estates, were given over to sheep, forestry, and deer, on one of the estates i was on in 1951, they shot 1000 brace, and 15 stags, in 1981 they shot 300 stags, and no grouse! oh well one of these days. cheers. ps on the estate my father was on he had 16 underkeepers!
  2. i understand where your coming from, yes indeed there used to be quite good grouse shooting all over ireland, i was in the south for 5 years and seen what looked like good grouse hill in many counties! but no birds? nothing but sheep and hoodie crows!, same in many parts of scotland, introducing raised birds is very difficult, becoming tame, andwill not mix with wild stock? heather burning, vermin control, drainage iack of ticks, etc would be necessary, i have a hill behind my house where they used to shoot 50 brace! now nothing but crows and foxes1 all the best
  3. sorry dude, no can do! that was in the good old days! and best day you could put a 1 in front of the 24, one day the book will be published then you'l read some real stores? cheers keep doin what your doin.
  4. i would love to own a gun shop down the road from you no realy just a bit of fun i tried to justify overlapping calibres for years, this comes from a guy that had 16 centrefires, until finally i just acceped the fact that i liked rifles! i'll give you an example i stalked hinds early one morning, got 10 with my 243, close enough to the house to get home tidyup and have something to eat, went out after lunch, for a wander wih the 222 nothing planned, but spied a close bunch of beasts, got in nice and killed 14! still needed all my other rifles though!
  5. cheers i miss it a lot, your pictures brought back good memories, had the best time with the lads. my youngest daughter was born there and very proud! she is. she went back there for a month, and looked up all the lads that i told her to, she had a great time. sadly i've never been back. my father was born in tipp. good luck.
  6. i would love to own a gun shop down the road from you
  7. seeing claymans, post, and looking at his bag of cock birds, brings back memories of my first time out with the lads, of the local gun club, neighbouring the estate where i was head keeper, it was going to be a good change for me, usually surounded by thousands of birds? now i was out with my dog and the boys! totaly happy to watch the dogs work with the chance of a shot or two? after working some cover, up burst 4 birds two of which came past me !, up goes the gun, bang, turn bang! cool right and left, the lads are looking at me ! openmouthed? what?, well, what? oh crap! forgot you can
  8. must try there more often ?
  9. live in the borders now, but shot and chased wildfowl all over!, loved all the big guns, but on one trip, all i had was the 8, and the lads decided to shoot rabbits till the next tide,? bolted rabbits with an 8 is quite an experience ! later moved on to 3'' mag ,hammer cheers
  10. Oh no really?? why you sell it? how much did you let it go for if you dont mind me asking?? had a single 4 as well ! no use telling, it would only start the both of us crying!!
  11. shot with a jw tolley 8 bore for years sadly gone now!
  12. first goose, on munlochy bay, 40 years ago, after that i chased them everywhere? culbookie, nigg, montrose basin, the tay, west coast, islay, solway, ireland, wexford slobs, toughbrochney bogs, you name it i might have been there! used to mud skip on the tay, with a friend who is now a very well respected head keeper! we used 20 silhouette decoys each, and both used ps olt calls, still have mine, could blow soft mallard, hard, pinks, grey's we learned to call pretty good. i could tell you about some obscene numbers we had ,but remember there were many blank days. i'm not trying to do
  13. good for you dude shot my first pink on munlochy bay, 40 years ago with a 44'' barrelled 4 bore! lay on my side out on the bay for ages! worth it though

    Question

dear peeps dont give up! happened to me christmas eve ! 30 years ago , did the same, went self employed, moved to ireland, had the best time of my life, then went to the states for 10 years you never know whats round the corner? hope things get better! all the best mark
  16. HI skip, i understand your difficulty in shooting the areas that you hunt i guess the elusive double! would be out of the question? especially as you have to mark one bird!. if you ever get the chance to hunt in ireland, south devon, or some of the outer hebrides in scotland you might be surprised by the amount you can shoot. i lived in the south for 5 years, and after being adopted by the lads! was invited to join their snipe SWAT TEAM ! on many occasions we killed over 100 - 150 in a day. when i was a keeper on one of the islands, they talked about my boss, who in his youth, o
  17. this is what i said at the beginning of this post
  18. KNOW WHY iv'e got a winch on the back ,and on the front of my VITARA?, so i can pull out all the oher's cheep, go anywhere i sold this one 2 years ago ! BOUGHT IT BACK AGAIN . And this is why I have a Land Rover, so I can laugh at all the pretenters. Rob dont think they have any mountains in lincolnshire?
  19. I HAD the use of tactical scopes iong before they became available to the public! and yes they have thier uses but in my opinion not in the hunting field
  20. KNOW WHY iv'e got a winch on the back ,and on the front of my VITARA?, so i can pull out all the oher's cheep, go anywhere i sold this one 2 years ago ! BOUGHT IT BACK AGAIN .
  21. ,you guys are all nuts! just like i was 40 years ago, cant beat it though. and if i was tom 1 cameron iwould not be to sleep for the last few nights
  22. you know what they say shootings easy? its people that make it hard !
  23. totaly agree with you iv'e used 8 or 10 x 56 fixed power all my life, the rest is up to the shooter to find out how far, how hgh etc never understood varie power scopes? waste of time in my opinion. give you an example my son has a nissan skyline, he has 3 stages of boost, fast, faster! and holy sh*t i wonder which setting he has it on ? runs 750 brake
  24. RANGEFINDERS, MILLI DOTS, BULLET DROP COMPENSATORS TACKTICAL SCOPES, ETC. what ever did we do without them? what about good old fieldcraft ?, guesswork, kentuky windage etc,? knowing your rifle, range zero, and so on was part of being a rifleman! come on guys, if i was a roe doe, buck, stag, hind, or fox, that you had just, surrprised, say round a corner, over a valley or hill, buy the time you had dial'd in your milli, adjusted your mag and found out what range he or she was , i would have stuck my tounge out thum'nd my nose at you! and BUGGERED OFF
  25. I've had a .22 for twenty years or so with open sights, never needed a scope for rabbits or fox. Always had something else to sort out the odd roe here and there before the busy body's got involved I've since moved on to land with a lot of deer, When the land check officer came to see me as the land had never been checked for a firearms he pointed out that deer cannot be shot with a .22 and perhaps I should apply for something bigger. NO PROBS i think you had us! a wee bit worried, there for a minute . cheers
