  1. great, post some photos. Looking forward to it, I love diver hunting
  2. agreed, I used a 1/2 choke last week with steel and it was way too tight. With Lead I always use 1/4
  3. they decoy readily, I would not bother painting them. Just get yourself near some deeper shelves off the edge and try some L-shaped decoy patterns. Any non-tox cart will do the trick. Try a windy choppy water day as that keeps the divers moving. I would use 3" steel 3's or bismuth 4's/5's Good luck
  4. hi,were getting the odd barnacle at findhorn bay now,and we had a pair of brent at portgorden last week, where do you park at the ythan ??by the bridge is a fair walk out,or do you park at meikle tarty,?? thinking of shooting it for a change, thanks jim You can park at meikle tarty, you will know when as you will come toa large gate near the end of teh track with some wildfowling leaflets on it. From there you can access all of that bank. Otherwise head over the bridge and take the first left beyond the estuary, head for the north bank bird hide or the fishermans shelter. Some good g

  6. No need to apologise, I am sure there are ways round this. Technically they cant be sold or bartered, but there is talk of there being a debate about this soon to aid control of Canada geese. Thats what I heard! I dont do much shootin' of geese in volume, but as I said a guide may be able to help. Send a personal message to wildfowler-2007. T
  7. No-one can sell you one, as it is illegal to even barter them. I dont know about canada's though? I know this was the status and I have not heard it had changed. Someone can just give you one if you find someone local who shoots them. Where are you based?
  8. if you find out let me know! I'll ask around to see what I can find out. The gun shop that is around there might know
  9. Yes Brents! See my post on the Ythan trip and you will see what SS means, but by and large this tends to be quite rare in Scotland
  10. Hi Stringer Get on google and start searching for sound clips of your likely quarry and non-quarry. That is the quickest way if the size or colour does not give it away. The RSPB and BTO websites can be very good, but you will find mpegs online via most search engines. The only big problem goose is the barnacle, make sure you know the sound of this one, it is easy to learn and a really big help. Too many "experts" dont know how to identify this goose from others. As you are in Scotland, Whitefronts are alse protected. Again listen to their calls, I am not sure how distinctive they are fr
  11. glasgow field sports on the M73/4? may have some, spin off company from the fishingmegastore.com
  12. Thankyou everyone, I was planning on a .243, but then I got "bitten" by the fox bug and though about downsizing Will the .243 not be a bit "loud" for foxing? And what about the bullet switch, 87g for everything? Is that pricey?
  13. Ladies and Gentlemen I am looking to obtain a FAC and rifle next year. I have experience with rifles, air and rimfire, but not the larger rifles so I do intend to get some more experience and join a club etc etc. However. The quarry I will be hunting will be roe and foxes. The roe ground I have presently is thick cover and I know that the shots that will be taken will be shorter distance of 50-100yds. On so many occasions I could have taken them at 15yds with my 12g but I have been very well disciplined! I want the rifle to be dual purpose, and to also be a good foxing calibre, as

    geese

Yup, but it does not effect my sleep, just my dreams. And I have to be honest, my fever is more about the ducks!
  16. If the post can take my weight.... why not
  17. Ardlaw country stores o turra'?
  18. On the foreshore of saturday I found a spent Victory Steel 3" shell. I never knew Victory produced a steel shell but I use their lead shells for hunting all the time, Victorys or Starlights. So has anyone used these and where can I get them from as I have not seen them on any sales lists online. They dont appear on the victory website either? T
  19. Anyone got any Canada goose shooting in Yorkshire, would love to connect with a Christmas dinner T
  20. have a walk around and look for fresh goose crap, lay decoys there is small groups of 3 and 4, scattered over this area. Give them a landing zone (i.e. a horseshoe shape) and get yourself hidden downwind of that zone. Calls not really required if they were feeding there anyway. A good box of minimag 3's through a 1/2 choke, neck shot, and goose in the freezer! good luck
  21. Edited version just published in SG (Jan 2008 Ed) Ladies & Gentlemen I dont get much fowling so when I do I make a day of it. Hence, on saturday past I got the chance, finally to go for my first fowling foray to my "home" marsh, the Ythan estuary north of Aberdeen. It is a small estuary but the area holds a great deal of waterfowl, there is a volunatry refuge downstream of the main road bridge but above that there are loads of places to go. I'm not really a goose fan, I target the duck and if I get a goose it is a bonus, but when I arrived on Saturday morning about 6.15am, t
  22. Beretta produce a range O/U steel proofed guns, as do browning I know that Remington just released a special edition 20g ruffed grouse society gun that I think is steel proofed. It is in their 2008 catalogue so should be available in the US. Get a steel proofed gun that can take high velocity nitro steel loads and you wont look back
  23. Both browning and beretta do their sporting O/U in steel proof now, but Lincoln and Lanber have also produced a wildfowling/field gun that is high proofed. The new Franchi or Fabarm auto is also proofed to a high standard for high performance steel If I had teh cash I would go for the Browning B525 waterfowler, 28" barrells MC if not, then the new Lanber Field
