:realmad: :realmad: :realmad: "we are there to give the fox an even chance and help it get away" :wankerzo4: Shows that fact they don't understand at all as they're helping the old/sick animals stay in the wild, where as if the hunt left alone by these cnuts the old/sick animals would be killed rather than being let to suffer in the wild while healthy animals are less likely to be caught by the hounds. Antis really really anger me! They claim to be 'animal lovers' or tree huggers or whatever but they have no concept of the countryside...just look at those who released the m

Cover Crop
bmetson replied to SportingShooter's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Might be a stupid idea but on one of the rough shoots I go on there's quite a lot of wet ground with reeds/grasses that the pheasants seem to love...also get a few woodcock in there in the colder months...not conventional cover but it would always be there and would hold birds if fed... -
Sadly I don't think that's far from the truth! We had a break in here in Manchester...2 days it took for the police to turn up and do anything about it... At least I know what to say next time!

That's a very good question!

Thanks for all the replies! A few of the posts have hit the nail on the head, without having shooting etc. on my CV I wouldhave very few interests! I guess I should try and just make myself sound as employable as possible and if that measn leaving out interests then I will...but then there's the law abiding good citizen post...and the idea of an anti paying for everything... but i guess it does depend on the job.. It's a while til I finish uni but I will have a think about what everyone has said, Thanks again

Is payPal an option for payment?
-
Maybe you're right...Although I was quite careful with the wording...I suppose it really depends on who I end up working for after my degree... I just don't want to miss any opportunities for employment but I also don't want to have to feel like what I am proud of and enjoy doing is something negative that might stop me getting a job.... Thanks for the tips though!

I had a short meeting with a careers advisor today to talk about my CV (I thought it would be a good idea considering the way things are at the moment) and it all went well for a short while... Then it came to my interests where I had put shooting and listed some conservation-type things I have been involved in, planting new woodland on the shoot etc etc... She told me that having this on my CV would most likely result in employeers not employing me she then told me it was not an appropriate interest to list... I explained that I had listed it because of the conservation things and th

Might be a stupid question but can it be plugged into the cigarette lighter thing in a car/4x4?

I have a feeling you have to be 16 to own a shotgun but you can get you licence younger, I think I got mine when I was 14...Then you have to shoot with someone else's gun...When I got my first gun it had to go on my dads SGC then was transfered onto mine when I was old enough... I think that's right but I may be wrong...

Wild ducks and spring/summer feeding
bmetson replied to bmetson's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Thanks for the replies I will be sure to pass the advice on! (Sorry I have not replied sooner...I have so much uni work on I get very little time for anything else... ) Ben -
My uncle had one 4 or 5 years ago and it had done about 60K miles when it caught fire at 70mph on a motorway... until then he was very impressed with it!

Wild ducks and spring/summer feeding
bmetson replied to bmetson's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
You sound like you already know the basics mate and your pond sounds ideal. Get the feeding in the shallow end and hope for the best. If you can get a hold of trailer full of old potatoes then fire them in too. Might be a plan if you are trying to keep the ducks there that you knock up a few nesting boxes on the island. Good luck and happy hunting Thank you for the quick reply! I will give that a go. With the nesting boxes though I am not sure what they should be like... -
The gamekeeper on my local shoot has talked about buying in some ducks for the large pond on the land, however with the 'credit crunch' most of the guns are worried about the cost of this...does anybody know of a way to attract wild ducks onto the pond? There have been some on there in the past and the pond is ideal with a small island and a shallow/marshy end. Also I was wondering if it is worth feeding into the spring and/or summer as there are a lot of birds still about with only the beater's day left. Thanks, Ben

what was the first thing you shot
bmetson replied to rabbit tourmentor's topic in Young Hunters Talk
First thing I shot (other than air!) was either a pigeon or a rabbit with an old air rifle at my grandparents house when I was about ten..First thing I shot with shotgun was a pheasant on my first stand, when about 13, with my first shot missed the second though...and the third... -
Started off beating with my dad when I was bout 5 or 6...Had 20bore from 10-14 then had 12bore bought just before 15th birthday. First evening lamping this summer and can't wait to get back to Essex for a couple of driven days I got bought for my 21st...

I have never been wildfolwing but read about if often in BASC and it looks tempting...Does anybody know of anywhere in or around the Essex area that would be a good place to start for a beginner? Also, is it very expensive? (Apart from the non-lead shot) Thanks, Ben

Hello, I am new (sort of!) I joined a while back but have been so busy with Uni work and stuff that I haven't really had time to come on here much so thought I would introduce myself... I'm 21 from Essex and currently living in Manchester for my last year at uni... I have been involved with shooting/ beating since I could walk and have a half gun on small shoot in Essex where I also help out the gamekeeper with feeding/pest control etc etc. I also enjoy rough shooting whenever I get the chance. Also do a bit of trapping/snaring but not very much due to uni workload. Just thought I wou

Hi, The small shoot I have been involved with for 12 years is one gun down this year so I though I would advertise it on here. Days vary anything from 50-120 bird days but are always good fun! The cost is £800 for the six days (all Saturdays) The shoot is located just outside of Braintree Essex and is a small, friendly syndicate shoot. For more information please call: 07831860188

Thanks, that's what I do and I'll have to tell my grandad to do the same! Ben

I am currently using some live catch traps for rabbits in a large garden belonging to my grandad, when he checks the traps and finds a rabbit he shoots it with the air rifle (in the trap) I was told this may affect future sccucss of the trap due to rabbits smelling the bunny blood (or something along those lines) Is this true?
