  1. Strikes me a lot of the variation is down to simple economics. If there's only one vet in an area, they can charge any joke prices they like. I'm lucky. There's several vets in a small area where I live. If one of them charges the sort of comedy prices I'm reading here, they'd find their customers buggering off to the cheaper one down the road. Last time i used mine, I paid £58. That was for a consult and treatment (steroid injection) at 8.30 on a Saturday night, ie an emergency out-of-hours job. The vet explained exactly what he was doing, was excellent with the ferret (not one of my m
  2. £30? I pay £12 for a consult....it's only £27 total if the vet comes out to me
  3. Just a couple of comments regarding ABs (anti-biotics) 1) You must finish the course. Failure to do so can lead to resistant bacteria, which is bad news for everyone. 2) ABs don't kill viruses. They do prevent secondary infections however.
  4. As I see it the number of queries here for which the answer is 'take it to the vet' seems no more than the pet forums. Might be a few more people on here though....
  5. pc??????? Bugger me sideways you hunter types are bloody mad.....
  6. Nasty? Having been involved in 'debates' regarding colour with some of these 'show types' I'd say you hunters are a better bag by far. At least you say what you think and don't fanny about playing psychological games Culling for shows? I've no proof it happens - 'show types' aren't as honest about such things as hunters - but given the genetic diversity in the average ferret, at most 10% of kits might be suitable for showing, and I have no idea what happens to the 'rejects'....
  7. And it's good to see that you've seen the light about serious shows Caz, because it ain't too long ago you were promoting trips to Stapeley with all your mates. The whole serious show scene is shit. Some of the stuff on here might appal you, but I'll wager worse goes on in the show scene. Pot-hunters turning up with 40-odd ferrets in the back of a bloody van....
  8. That's a superb approach to it. Hope you catch mate, excellent photos. A couple of lads had about 350lb out of a local river with a prebaiting campaign a few years back...reedy, slow, plenty of tench and bream.....
  9. In which case you might understand the difference between 'expecting to find' a behavioural gene, and 'have found' one. So sadly, no 'conclusive proof'. 'Obviouse facts'? only if you really don't understand how science research works. No shame in that, but maybe not throwing the dummy out might help you think more clearly. And I'm not a 'show breeder'. Yet another assumption you make about someone you know nowt about....
  10. Could be worse, will. You could be an evil Pet Ferret Owner
  11. Not at all. Someone makes a statement or posts a link, I think it's reasonable to assume they understand what they're posting.
  12. not so silly that 2 seconds googling produced this ... read towards the bottom ........ http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2004/...40521072934.htm Presumably the lack of an update since 2004 means that the 'expected' uncovering of genes responsible for behaviour hasn't happened. Quite possibly because they weren't there. 4 years is quite long enough for the relevent DNA analysis.....
  13. Not so silly as to suggest there's a 'hunting gene'....
  14. There isn't a 'hunting gene' any more than there's a 'rugby playing' gene or a 'bullshitting' gene in humans.....
  15. At least when you're breeding for working you're breeding for purpose, not colour. The genetic problems around at the moment - silvers/DEWs, Waardenberg's - are directly due to breeding for shows, where colour does matter. In the long term, I think that these problems will cause more misery for ferrets than killing day-old kits.
  16. it's windy over here too....
  17. Jazz is 15 if you look at his profile. Now I've known more 15 yo's than jojoamojo has had hot dinners (yes, that many ) and if Jazz's profile is correct, then he's not lacking in application. But many 15 yo's find it difficult to express themselves coherently in words, and I believe Jazz when he says that he cleans out his ferrets twice a day and is getting the ferret to the vets on Tuesday. I also think if it was pyometra the ferret would be noticeably ill and have been seen already. Just my thoughts
  18. A very good point. I must remember to moderate my posts ..... If I had, I'd have substituted the word 'thoughtless' for 'an idiot'
  19. I understand your need to replace aging stock, but did you 'need' to breed two jills? I also accept your point about culling early. And remember: just cos you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you
  20. Read my posts, socks. Like ALL of the posts not just the bits you fancy arguing with. Then THINK...not all the people arguing against culling are 'namby pamby cotton wool sentimentalists'. Maybe it's that we're not all 'extreme hunters' that upsets you? The argument 'it's always been thus' cuts no ice with me. Things change, and not adressing issues like this will lead to problems. For the record, I havent said I'm opposed to culling per se. I am opposed to preventable culling. Culling done because the culler overbreeds through thoughtlessness, lack of planning or just pla
  21. thanks for the reply droid and i see you have kept it a friendly debate lol , i dont care what pet owners think as i have breed for working stock , one thing you will notice is that i dont follow the band or because the internet says so. you say 'fuel the prejudices of pet owners' and i would say 'fuel the prejudices of anti's' aswell , i think you dont quite understand that im not the only one who has these views . so what would you say to the lad who has worked dogs all his life and wants to keep a line of dogs to himself , lets say he breeds bullcross's and he lost a dog in the sea
