  1. Things might run smoother if some people didn't regard any contradiction of what they say as a mortal insult, and react accordingly.
  2. You were the one who doubted that there were any really untameable ferrets. And have you seen my ferrets? Know what I feed them on? ....
  3. I agree. But I guess it depends how much time and patience you have.....
  4. If ferrets or dogs don't catch mixy, what's the problem?
  5. That, Sir, is utter bollocks.

    polecats

That might be coincidence. I realise that polecats are more aggressive than ferrets, but that's because polecats are wild animals, ferrets are domesticated.

Mendel tried to explain simple monohybrid crosses. He was never about predicting mutations, which by their nature are pretty random. Your link referred to Kate Middleton. Nostradamus missed that one too.....

Maybe not, but many mutations follow Mendelian principles, like albinism in most species, Multiple Sclerosis, Huntingdon's Chorea, etc etc.

Which is why I asked about albino*albino crosses.

Thats because what you get depends on chance, which is why I got told off for hypothesising from a single example. Over many examples Mendelian ratios will hold true, if colour in ferrets is based on a single gene. Albinism is a pretty simple mutation. It's happened in many species, including humans.
  11. Well I'm lost for words,I just can't understand why that would be!!. :wallbash: I can think of 6 reasons.....
  12. I have 3 neuter hobs, and they're fine together.

As far as I'm aware, yes. My excuse for getting this wrong is several pints of Pedigree....

Cheers Crow. You explained that well. How would you describe the phenotype of the 'A' allele though?

So if you mate albino with albino then you're guaranteed all albino kits?

It is just that droid As you probably know albinos have an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance therefore are the only ferret colour you can look at and know for sure it's genetic make-up. So how do you explain the relatively high incidence of albinism within ferrets?

Tthing is, notwithstanding my balls up yesterday, the stuff Crow explained is pretty simple. I could explain most of it in 15 minutes sat in a pub. Including the long words like 'heterozygous' As long as I was fully awake.... Relating it to ferrets is rather more speculative though, save the obvious bits like DEW/Silver 'lethal' genes and Waardenburgs. At the risk of provoking Crow again, I don't think the situation with albinos in ferrets is quite as simple as in most other species.

Quite correct, total bollocks, and a lesson to me not to post within half an hour of getting up. With regard to drawing conclusions from a specific event, I agree, but it was a hypothesis, definitely not a theory!. Not sure how you're going to manage an 'infinite' number of crosses, but you make the point well. Glad someone else brought up Punnet Squares. And Mendelian nomenclature. Next off: genotype/phenotype/homozygous/heterozygous

Unless your 'line' started when the Romans invaded you ain't got a 'pure and true' line anyway. All you can do is improve the chances of a given colour. I'll keep my council regarding breeding for hunting ability....

What you had there was a Poley wit 1 dominant 'poley' version of the 'colour' gene and one recessive 'albino' version of the colour gene. And an albino with 2 recessive 'albino' versions of the colour gene. Mathematically (and if my computer skills were better I'd show you how to work it out) you had a 1 in 4 chance of getting an albino. You haven't, whiich suggests that the 'albino' version in ferrets is becoming (or has become) dominant. This does happen in genes. Ferrets have been domesticated for about 2000 years so that's plenty of time for it to happen. Especially if albinos were se

True. But what throws some people is that the albino gene can be carried by ferrets of any colour. It's recessive, so if there's a dominant gene alongside it, then that dominant gene will determine the colour of the ferret.

I totally agree with stubby about silvers/DEWs, but there shouldn't be a problem with genetically robust types like poleys or Albinos. You still won't be able to guarantee what colours you get though...

    a question

I've said all I'm going to regarding the genetics of DEWs and Silvers on another thread. I might be wrong, but I think friedrice had some input into that thread....
