whats bad food for a lurcher
Wild Whippies replied to liam2009's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Potatoes are a good source of carbs for a dog. However raw potatoes can contain solanine which in large amounts can cause serious illness (it is the same toxin that is found in deadly nightshade) One indication of even heavier concentrations of solanine is when the potato skin is green (as the toxin lies just underneath the skin and should be cut out and removed - even if the potato is to be cooked) I don't agree with feeding a dog 'junk' as it does effect performance and more importantly recovery following exertion. However, I've got a 15yr old dog who's appetite has decreased over the pa -
There's a number of people looking to offer a whippet a home on the whippet forum. The whippet forum Additionally, there is Scruples whippet rescue Scruples link or JR Whippet rescue Whippet Rescue I know Scruples will organise transport of the dog into foster care and will do vetting of homes which might be helpful if there's some urgency to rehome.

They say every greyhound has it's winning distance and every greyhound is well bred. I don't believe a specific breed is multipurpose. They all have areas in which they excel be it the quarry they're coursing, the distance their running and the terrain it's on. All this is with the presumption that the owner is a decent ''dog'' man. I'm not denying there may well be dogs that are considered to be ''multi purpose'' by their owners (and especially breeders!) but personally I think a more accurate summary would be to say they are ''jacks of all trades'' and experts at none. Whether an ow

Fab shots I think racers have been overwhelmed by the warm reception they've received at Shirebrook. Track looks superb and imagine it'll be meerly a matter of time before they have some opens on there and whippet racers from across the country will be going!

Not so much my situation (fracture repairs requires a lot of care from the owner and thankfully my boss is my partner) I appreciate others may not have the means though. But the dog, it's character and the break your dealing with are the factors for whether a break can be succesfully repaired or not. Had a whippet break her leg as a youngster (spiral fracture of ulnar and radius) whilst she was young, she wasn't a bouncer and had it repaired succesfully and went on to become a champion. I've had a friends dog go down with a broken hock, it was decided to PTS but the main factors where the

Would like people to respond to this as it appears there are a lot of people wanting to know which particular breedlines excel well at coursing and I'm afraid it's hard to keep up with all the comings and going in the whippet world!

I'm so glad this has been well received! Some lovely dogs popping up too Sorry to put a downer on this thread but I have to bring this up... Chartpolski, for the record it was the comment below posted on K9 that resulted in you being moderated: Such opinions are not well received with people who love their dogs and are not well received by anti's either Additonally, I know for a fact you was not banned. You was put onto moderator preview for 2 days. This was to prevent you adding more inflammatory remarks and causing upset to the members who had logged complaints wit

IF you are feeding the pup a complete meal ,then by NO means give a pup the suppliment bone meal.it can mess with their growth plates.IF you are making up the food then thats fine but stick to the recomended amounts I think I said something similar if you read the thread through. I asked if bonemeal was being given, I didn't recommend it.

I was asked to post some photos of the different types of whippets. Before I do I should explain something. In the U.K., Whippets are best judged as a type of dog, not a specific breed. Liken them to a terrier with various different types. The Kennel Club have no jurisdiction over the name whatsoever. In fact it could be argued that the KC dog is so far removed from it's original type as to be seen an entirely different entity. I am not being biased here, I own both pedigree and non-pedigree whippets and like both types not only that but the variation provides dogs that can be exceedingly

Good range of movement then with no restriction which is good. I still suspect carpal subluxation. I don't doubt the working dog feed is good quality but just while he's growing, I'd recommend you feed him a puppy food specifically for large breeds. It's just that these will give him the correct amounts of minerals like calcium and phosphorous. You can supplement but the problem is sometimes supplementing if not at the correct dose can cause negative feedback and actually inhibit the bodies uptake of minerals. Don't take my word for it though, seek advice from the vet but I do suspect this i

I'll do another thread so as not to hijack this one.

They've been used for different disciplines. Mary Lowe owns the affix Nimrodel, some are show dogs but I know the likes of Lynperry have used the line for their stamina and I've heard the affix mentioned a lot in coursing bred dogs.

I think I read somewhere that the extra muscle on a double muscled whippet can be a big negative due to the dog having too much muscle for it's circulatory system. They are then prone to getting huge build ups of lactic acid and suffering cramps? Yes, I mentioned it earlier on in the week. The bully whippet basically has too much muscle mass for her frame and as such her blood supply can't fulfil the muscles demand. She tends to sprint for about 50yds max before fading. She did get cramps, very severe ones infact but we've managed to keep her cramp free for a year now.

Incidently, there's about 1.8 grams of creatine in a lb of raw beef.

I tend to agree. On saying that though. Whippets have become more split and purpose bred to their discipline. What I mean by this is that I suspect a Laguna dog now would struggle to win at both showing / racing / coursing. With such purpose breeding I'd like to think that a coursing bred dog now would be of better calibre than it's ancestors. The problem these days is there are no public coursing events where a prospective owner can observe a particular breedline in action. There is lure coursing but other than that a buyer is reliant on making a judgement based on trust. Buyer beware come

What's his breeding? There are different types of whippet, there's also a gene within non-peds that inhibits myostatin. Myostatin is what limits muscle mass. Therefore if the dog has one of the genes, it will make it build more muscle. Sometimes (rarely) a dog will possess 2 of the genes which results in what's known as a bully whippet, like the one seen below. Working bred whippets and show lines tend to have a smoother look about them. Racing whippets look very 'cut' as it were. The smoother dog will tend to have more stamina wheras the racer will be a faster animal. The reason be
