  1. Maybe I am wrong but we have two ringed doves living near home and I could'nt shoot them. They may be vermin but I would like to know what damage they do as these pair really only live in the trees near here. And they are very pretty. Knifebar
  2. Hello, Just to let you know I have finished my larsen and here it is!! What do yiz think? Knifebar
  3. Hi all, Does anyone have any advice on what fly selection to use early season on a river, good flow plenty of water and 2 -6 feet deep. Sea Trout the target but would settle for a good brownie! Knifebar
  4. You wanna see the stuff you have to go through in N. Ireland for a rifle, unbelievable! . The last I heard a police officer had to interview the applicant to see why he needed a rifle, followed by a farm inspection, followed by another interview, followed by months of waiting and followed by phones calls to the police, followed by numerous communications followed by FAC 18 months!! How about that then. Knifebar
  5. This is as far as I have got with the Larsen, I need to wire it up and it will be ready. I shall let you know how I get on. Knifebar
  6. What sort of trap have you got? Knifebar
  7. It is now illegal to use alphachloralose on meat to poison magpies and hoodies in the Republic of Ireland. Edited by JohnGalway. I know what you mean with alpha but the problem is making sure other birds don't get it. The odd crow would'nt matter but I'ed be afraid of knocking of some other species. Although I will keep this as a last resort, failing the larsen dosent work. Thank you Lost Gneration Knifebar
  8. Yep, I shall try him and if he proves not worthy he can go back to guarding post men lol. Knifebar
  9. The sort of Russell he is, was the man that originally owned him bought the best Russell money could buy. Unfortunately he could'nt handle him, fighting with other dogs, challenging him etc etc. I am going to ask him if I can take him to a fox dig, to see how good he is with an experienced terrier. He has no experience but i am confident knowing his personality he will do the biz. Knifebar

  11. No prob mate Thanks. Just wondering would the length of the barrel make a difference as I would like a 28". Oooh yea its new but it feels great and easy to use. I will have to ask the gun shop for definate on barrel size. Cheer Knifebar
  12. Dear Forum, I am toying with buying a new O/U shotgun. I was in a gun shop and seen a Lincoln M/C Lightweight £695. Does anyone know if this is a good gun or not so good. Man in shop said it was a 28" barrel but I think it's a 26.75". I must also say it feels good much better than a Beretta or Baikel I have looked at, I must see if I can get to use one to see how it shoots . Would someone be able to put me on the straight and narrow or am I on my own with this. Help Knifebar
  13. Thanks John B, I will certainly try this as it seems Magpies have a particular taste for eggs it seems. Although before I trap I will have to lay off the shotgun as I have the living hell scared out of them. Funny thing, I shot a Grey Back Crow and this on its own seems to have scared the Magpies more than anything. Sheep farmer close is very happy as he has lost lambs due to grey backs taking the eyes out of new born's. Knifebar
  14. I have been held up as local building supplies did'nt deliver the timber I needed. I had some old pressure treated laths left over from a job I had done. So I made the frame no problem, I used high adhesive glue and 3" screws to put it together. But I am waiting on 1/4" exterior ply and chicken wire 1" in order to progress. I am ordering the trap springs on e-bay today so they should arrive this week sometime. I have on slight problem, I don't know how to catch a call bird. I am thinking if the weather gets frosty a piece of bait or something when the are hungery and try to get one
  15. Thank Outhunting, I am going to keep the campaign going as our other birds need to be nurtured. They are a scurge wrecking other wildlife. Although their mate THE SQUIRREL (grey) are not not seen much around here, the odd one but dispatched when opportunity arises. I only know one man are here who has got one, sort of privileged he is. 16. Well then that explains it, its not just a name on a gun. I shot with a Beretta at a gun shop once with a mate and we both used the gun. Afterwards we were of the same opinion we did'nt like it, very dissappointed. I must say before I buy a new shotgun I will use several different makes before I purchase. The only thing is, it would need to be good as the Baikel I have, I can hit most things (and the gun is 50 yrs old). Knifebar
  17. I know a man with a Russell, Pedigree breed, Show winning breedlines, Very agressive he does not hunt but the other day I was in a field with him and he went to a fox on his own, no training (DOG TOTALLY WASTED). I'ed say he would make brilliant stud. Someone tried to steal him one afernoon and he left them needing stitches. Top Dog Knifebar PS I would need to ask the owner would he stud him.

    Donations

I'm not so sure I feel this is a very worthy site and the information and advice I have obtained since I was a member was very helpful indeed. £5 is a very small amount to pay. Hunt Fees £500, Horse and Tack £10,000, Shot Guns from £300 to £10,000. Feret Finders £180, Lurchers and Terriers up £500, etc etc. Its not much to ask for IanB. I did'nt even know you could donate until it was posted. I still think members should be made more aware that they can donate. If you think your getting too much money, give it to the Hospice for elderly care. (My wife is a care nurse and the
  19. Well Done Me and Horse was out yesterday for a few hours we ferretted about 35 acres and all we got was to bolts. There must be alot of foxes around I would have thought there were more rabbits than that hear. Keep hunting Knifebar
  20. Thanks Spiderpig, At the moment I have a single barrell 12 bore Baikel 28 5/8 ", You load and shoot thats it. But da ya know its a great gun I can kill most game and vermin with it, problem is whilst ferretting I need a second barrell. I would'nt give up this Gun as dad gave it to me. How much would I expect to pay for a new Shotgun. Knifebar
  21. Thanks Tis TM, I am currently making a trap that Big Fish posted here but its going to take a bit of time as its my first attempt, although it's going good so far. These damed birds needs to be dealt with cause the small song birds I have noticed are on the move for breading season. I also watched a magpie hunt a Wag Tail in the hedge this morning but I cound'nt shoot dam bird, it was to close to neighbours house. I am sitting looking out at the field with cattle and there is 5 in it at the moment but I can't shoot them, brother would'nt like it if I shot a cow. LOL. Knifebar
  22. Hello Forum, I have been in gun shops and I have seen several guns etc. etc. but I wonder could someone explain a shotgun to me. Most guns have all types of settings and chokes but I do not understand it all, I would not really be interested in trap shooting but mainly hunting which means distance and killing power is what is required. Does any one know of a general purpose gun that you would use for:- A. Foxes B. Rabbits C. Crows and Magpies but would have a respectable kill distance. I know a chap has a Shadow Indy its a heavy gun but has great distance, now don't ask me about cho

  24. I have shot a number of Magpies this past few days and despite this there seems to be more and more of them. There used to be only around 3 or 4 birds but now its like a Hitchcock film. Yesterday I counted in excess of 15 birds in the tree beside home. Does anyone know why this is happening, I would have thought they would avoid this area once some were shot. Hopefully someone in the forum will have a answer to this. Knifebar
