  1. hi all. my girlfriend has an 8 month old borderxlakeland pup who eat anything and everything, and recently had to take him to vet only to discover he'd swallowed a screw. last night and today he seems lethargic, off his food and just not his usual self. if he has swallowed something again, does anyone know of a way to help it on it's way out? or would you just adive trip to vet? and any ideas on how to stop it happening in future? i have years of working with dogs, but always good to get opinion of others. thanks in advance.
  2. mike and pennymeadow - wonderful looking dogs there gents, really smashing. always had leggier/taller lurchers meself, but moving to smaller house soon, so seriously thinking of getting pure whippet. what are they like at retrieving? would only be working on rabbits, perhaps have a go at hares.
  3. really it all comes down to whether or not your doing this as sport or as pest control. for me it's sport. as hard as i go at it when the nights are cold and dark, during the spring summer i love to go out and just watch, see whats about. i have a real love/hate relationship with charlie fox. (acutally, just love/love!)
  4. Most of my dogs past and presant eat and ate fruit, apples, bananas, kiwi's, pears, oranges etc, etc. When I am collecting blackberrys they stand there picking their own, never had a problem with them. At the moment the foxes are filling up with cherrys their poop is filled with cherry stones and my neighbour has shot them out of his trees . haha should make that into new olympic sport - cherry tree fox shooting!! would love to see it.
  5. hey nutter, whereabouts in gogledd are you?
  6. step 1, get a new fecking vet!
  7. almost too scared to post on here now... lol andy, i've had two greyhoundxcollies, and have never disapointed in what you say your after. to be honest mate, best thing is to try get some experience like someone else posted, a lot of it will come down to what you like to see in a dog. good luck. lol@bum licker comment!
  8. good luck mate. thought if he can take on a car and survive the vermin has no chance!!
  9. to start some crack, pip?? each to their own, personally i think you'd have more fun with the craic...
  10. welcome hope you have fun here. that is dedication to the cause, good on ya!
  11. aye mate, sounds about right that, flushing is always good. with me, even if im just out walking (on land i have permission of course!) and if i see something, i'll get down to pups level, wait until i know he's seen it and when dog is wanting to go, then slip it. any experiene for it is good, whether it cathes it or not, and then just give it loads of praise when it comes back. keep us posted. cheers.
  12. yeah, gotta agree with bird, if something has become lamp shy, then i dont think red, amber etc makes much difference.
  13. yeah awful stuff. knew of a good bitch once who went to break through gap in hedge after hare (pre ban!) and there was two strands of the oldest rusted barbed wire hidden in there, punctured bottom of throat and top of chest, ripped her up.
  14. at that age i use nutro then at about 3 months start to move onto raw, then keep 'em on raw for life.
  15. he can probably bounce back on his bald bonce! gotta love ferrets that just dont give in, like a good terrier - just hang on in there to get the job done.
  16. yeah speaking from my own experience have to say if it had been fox then the ferrets would be worse than just bitten heads. could quite possibly be mink, was it near a river/stream etc? mink are right litte sh1ts.
  17. welcome to the forum august, hope you have fun here. dont be shy to ask any questions, some very knowledgeable guys (and girls) here.
  18. brian plummer books always good.
  19. good adive from squirrel. only thing i can add is, that if the dogs not showing an interest, or losing interest in the food reward, then you kneel/sit by dogs sleeping area and throw dummy from there. chances are if the dog does go pick it up, he'll wanna bring it back to his bed, so you wait there, take it and give big fuss. they soon realise the rewards. good luck.
  20. i'm in middle of moving to nottingham from north wales - tons of rabbits in wales, no hare. absoute opposite in notts, loads of hares. all to do with the land though aint it, good flat arable in the east of country, ideal for hares.
  21. thanks for all the tips guys. glad to say that he's back to full health now, was sluggish for another day or so, i made sure he kept drinking plenty, didnt feed for a day and half then offered some dry biscuits with little gravy and he kept that down. back to his usual self now. toughest little git i ever met!! cheerz.
  22. im not a million miles away from there mate, will keep ears open. good luck.
  23. yeah, couple of problems there mate, i see what you mean about worrying extra cos they aren't your ferrets. and since your dog is 9month now. i usually do it the most simple of ways but im not sure it'll work now with dog your age but if you keep eye on them whole time it might be worth a go, but i usually do it with pup young as possible, around 8 weeks, just let one pup at a time into pen with ferrets, prefferably a big hob who isn't afraid of anything, as after a couple of nips for getting too close the will frighten pup and it will soon get the messge and have more respect for the ferrets.
  24. hey there guys. since i know there are so many experienced terriermen here just wanted some advice. my old jack russell has, for the past 3 nights been up about 5 times needing to go out and then having the sh 1 t's!! sometimes crouching down to go but little coming out and just walking around like that for bit. so i was wondering if anyone could tell me what it might be & how to get rid of it? he's 13 years old and has been a hard working warrior and a loyal companion so i want him to get back to his best ASAP. thanks for any help!
