  3. BASC have at least four female coaches to my knowledge. There is no bar to ldies becoming coaches - you just need the time and dedication to do it.
  4. I can double up on that - howabout "Try googling force fetch"
  5. If you like reading about spaying try this one Long term effects
  6. Treat water as an obstacle to the retrieve, not as a different type of retrieve and so always send the dog over the water not into it. After all you didn't learn to swim by being asked to jump into the deep end of the pool. Start with a marked retrieve over small shallow stream then gradually increase the width and depth alternating with blinds and marks. Do not over face the dog as it may start to squeak or, if the water is deep, to shake before it presents so be prepared to go back to the shallow bit. Always keep in mind that it is the retrieve itself that is paramount and do not accept poor
  7. just seeing if people still worked them. see this recent thread
  8. And the point of this thread is???????
  9. Are spaniels good with wildfowl? He wants a retriever. If he is going to use ferrets for rabbits and shoot them why would he need a spniel to hunt them up? I think the clues are in the original post.......
  10. Sorry Turk this thread is going off on one...... Your don't want multi-discipline dogs as a first dog so go for a straight forward retriever - there are masses of perfectly good labs and sensible prices start with. Spaniels are not the easiest to train for a novice and there ar all sorts of pitfalls, worse still would to be to consider an HPR as you first dog. Nothing wrong with either spaniels or HPRs but not under your circumstances and not as a first dog.
  11. There is a good line of goldens called EVAL based in Cornwall although the owner has really slowed down a bit now. There is another chap that runs his goldens at a shoot just north of Bodmin. The Williams family at Werrington Park are well known for their goldens. I am heavily involved with the Cornwall Field Trial Society and at 2 out of the 3 retriever trials this year goldens have taken first place. There are many more well know breeders just over the border in Devon.
  12. This is not the most recent one but does give a good idea of what are dogs are like.
  13. Oh and btw I do test and trial with my goldens but I aslo pick up with them all the time, I run a picking up team and regularly shoot over my dogs. The OH and I have eight goldens between us.
  14. Sorry this is bollocks - the goldens have always been a minority breed in terms of numbers compared to the common garden labs. However the working side of the breed has shown a tremendous resurrgence in the last 10/15 years with many more working goldens in the field, in tests and in trials. There are certain geographical areas where they are strong, the south west, east anglia, the midlands, northumbria and of course Scotland which is from where they originate. Yes Andrew Wright won the championship a couple of years ago, this year 4 goldens qualified and ran in the championship and three of
  15. You're timing is all wrong to have a pup, even a well bred lab pup. Everything will under strain with a new baby and the pup will be the one to suffer the consequences. Wait till the baby has come and everything has settled down or go for an older lab that maybe has been part trained. It will cost more money and you will have to do a lot of research to make sure the dog is OK but it will be calmer and you will learn a lot from it which will help you with your next dog.
  16. I don't understand the question. Do you mean who is best at training their own dogs? Or who is best at taking in other people spaniels to train? Or do you mean whio is best at teaching to train you own spaniel. There are lots of people who can train dogs to the highest level who can't teach for nuts. There are also lots of people who teach really well but don't compete for whatever reason. So what is your question!
  17. Cheers guys and that is just what this forum is all about. Any of you guys can give this youngster a start as the old codgers have really beat up on him just 'cos he uses text speak Young hunter
  18. I suppose that's why when these good American gundogs came over to the UK to compete in the International Retriever Test they got whopped and then returned to the US never to be seen again.............
  19. it is not a training aid it is an instrument of correction
  20. Going back to basics means going right back to the start. People tend to skip over some parts because they feel the dog has got it - whats goes in easily tends to come out just as easily. Your progess through the various stages will be much quicker because your dog is much more mature this time around. You must go right back and insist the sits and stays are 100% whether the dog is beside or a couple of feet away. You must make sure your heelwork is 100%. Make your whistle work is 100%. Recalls must be perfect. The dog must have no free running - when you take the dog for a walk keep it on
  21. I use my chihuahua for wildfowling - brilliant dog but it takes three weeks to get the Canada's back to hand
