  1. Had a mooch this morning, apart from about 20 pheasants nothing.
  2. Save yer money mate, train em to run off a slip, failing that thin rope with handle on does the job, other contraptions to fiddly. All the best.
  3. Nice dog mate, worked wisely it will give years of service. Good luck with him. All the best WR.
  4. Cant see the point unless you havent got proper secure kennels mate, different if dogs are loose or yard dogs.
  5. Niether, train them to work off the slip altogether, to run on your click or hiss.
  6. Good crack mate and smashing little bitch. All the best WR.
  7. Try this it works mate. STARTING_A_LAMPING_PUP.doc
  8. I have a ACD X Grey/WHIP, she is only 21 inch at the most, very stocky, no flying machine but great hunter, handy moocher and ferreter, never lamped due to my retirement from lamping, what happend to the line you started Chalkwarren, did you move away from the ACD and if you dont mind me asking why.
  9. Have seen and worked with most of the crosses except Kelpie over the last 30 year, all different, attitude, temprement, drive and mentality, some breeds softer than others, many good workers in all crosses, some that dont make the grade, it all depends on how and where you work them, how they are entered, my preference is what I keep, one mans meat is another mans poison.Good question, all the best WR.
  10. Good bag, good photos, shame about the wild bunch and the end, hahah.
  11. Used to use electrolytes on hard lamping nights, 40 plus runs, giving the dog a couple of drinks during the night, you can buy them off the internet or make your own, I used to use dextrol or similar, salt and potasium, mix 5% salt, 10% potasium to 85% dextrol, others may use other mixtures of similar salts, have used sugar water in an emergency but dont recommend it on regular basis.
  12. Great photos mate, sounds familiar, my ACD X WHIP/GREY just the same, good prey drive and only wants to work. cheers WR.
  13. Photo of my first ACD Lurcher, he was only black speckle in litter, he died in 2000, my current first cross is black red and black speckle and was only one in litter, hes 10 in January.
  14. Lost my bitch not long after the last pic was taken when she was nearly 11 months, she was the litter sister to caterpillers dog.She herself had plenty of speed for a 1/2x and had a good few rabbits,a few long ears as well as a few cwd under her belt, all retreived within the law.Likes been said not everyones cup of tea as they do need work/mental stimulation/some way of letting off steam and brain power or else they can make life hard work for sure, they are dog which does command a little extra work but they sure are worth the effort . Great photos mate, how you doing, Caterpiller be goo
  15. The original lurcher line in 1993 were bred from a blue ACD from pet/show stock, the lad that bought the pup worked it with his lurchers, mainly hunting up, it did lamp but never had the speed, the first crosses would catch daytime rabbits and lamped well, and when legal deer and foxes. They can be strong willed, protective but are hardy, strong, good feet, good nose, trainable, they will not suit some lurcher people but i have had nothing else since 93, the little red one came from wales she is ACD X WHIP/GREY, she is only 21inch but very strong boned, I only mooch and ferret now and they s
  16. I always start with nets on, get the pup used to rabbits in the net, let it hold them in the net, when happy, leave a couple of nets off, let it chase back to other holes, encourage the pup to fill its nose with scent at the hole. Leave the nets off for a couple of chases, then when the penny has dropped combine it all together. Marking, working the nets and chasing bolters. Patience.
  17. Do you always walk the older dog on that side, do you always keep it that side when lamping, if so its all the dog Knows mate, i always alternate the sides so the dogs aint bothered which side they walk. Good Luck. WR.
  18. Because there are lots of men with lurchers and not many lurchermen about!!! some its just a fad, many dont know why they have them, for what quarry, get wrong type or breed for their need, dont know how to bring one on, how to train them, dont know about working them, their health, conformation, build, movement, good feet, bad feet. Basically nothing, or am I just getting old. All the best. WR.
  19. Got a couple of photos of Flimby if you want em mate.

  20. why do you say that? By all means let the pup watch what goes on round the sets, but before you let it go on runners ensure it is mentally and physically mature to deal with what you are asking it to do. By the look of the photo it isnt ready for hard strenuous work, being a pup, frustration could set in and start yapping, take your time mate, dont spoil a cracking little dog by being too eager to start it. All the best. WR
  21. Yes mate just the young un, it was a bit warm for the old lad, he still gets out with us, when a bit cooler for him, still keen as mustard though. Cheers.
