since Dan is away from his computer for the moment on a bit of a forced holiday, and he also never looks anywhere except for the running dog forum, I'm not sure if he'll see this!

  7. Ashover my post was not aimed at you but at the original poster with the bull cross that bit her ... I didn't really read much about your terrier other than it was 9 years old. A minor thing now is just the first step towards a major problem. My husband has 2 partial bull blooded dogs, I have 2 half bull crosses and collectively have had quite a few full and crosses on my yard over the years, so we are not part of the anti bull brigade by any stretch of the imagination. We keep about a dozen dogs between the two of us at any one time, and we are always on the lookout for cuntish behavior
  8. dog needs getting rid of permanently IMO, dog aggression in a hunting dog can be curtailed somewhat by an EXPERIENCED person (always worked single, on a chain, excercied alone etc), but no one should try and "handle" a man aggressive hunting dog, and that is what your dog is becoming. You may not THINK that it is a problem, but you are deluding yourself ... it is a BIG problem and will only get worse. A LOT worse.

  10. thanks folks, good advice and I'm being put into touch with someone who is into carting. She used to be a rehab horse for handicapped kids, and I remember them saying something about her not "liking" the rails they used, so I am going to call the horse facility and ask more about what they meant by that.

  14. is it soft like flesh? Did you try and pull it off? It looks like the dogs been chewing on something and gotten its tooth stuck?
  15. I've had my 4 goats in with the horses for a couple of years and they don't touch the horses manes and tails ....
  16. B you live in a difficult area, you will have to do some driving to hook up with any working folks. When we lived in Nevada it wasn't unusual to drive 10-20-30 hours each way to go digging, no joke. The running dogs were a different thing, we could drive 20 minutes and run out of dogs before we ran out of things to run. a dog can weigh 14 pounds when it is sitting in a kennel doing nothing other than "looking" good, and weigh 20+ pounds when it is in good substantial working condition. So don't get hung up on a dogs size, it is its drive and desire to get to its quarry, at any cost, tha
  17. I would like to get a lightweight cart to use my older mare while trotting the dogs, but have 1.) never used a cart 2.) never trained a horse to use a cart. Is it relatively easy on a calm horse, or should I look somewhere like the Amish or a local Haflinger farm for help?
  18. good for when an ice storm has come through, it is hazardous just walking to the barn or kennel, much less keeping a dog fit when there are ice skating rinks everywhere you look for days on end! The amount of time it takes to get dogs fit can go down the drain very quickly if they are left stagnant for even just a few days. I remember a YouTube clip from 5-6 years ago of several salukiX lookin dogs barking like mad to get on a treadmill and have it switched on
  19. glad to hear, do you have other dogs or just this bitch?
  20. does the dog live in kennels or in the house? Do you have any other dogs? If you have other dogs DO NOT let the new bitch spend any more than a few minutes with the other dogs, they are pack animals and you need to establish that you are the ONLY pack member for this new bitch. Good luck, be patient, it will be hard going but it CAN be done.
  21. every dog is going to be different depending on work load, weather, current condition, and if they are on a well rounded flesh diet versus kibble ... for example our 60 pound running dogs will eat 3 cups of kibble when they aren't working, but when being fed for hard work they will eat 2 cups of flesh, 1 cup of fat, 1 cup of veg, 1 cup of kibble. Our 60 pound guard dog will barely eat a cup of food a day ... completely different metabolism though
  22. Kay do you know if that mare has dropped its foal/foals yet?
