help with rough shooting
stevoman replied to langouroux's topic in Driven, Walked Up, Rough Shooting
Whats a lewellin setter look like ??????? looks like an english setter. it can also be argued all day whether she's a lewellin or an english setter. the breed isnt officially recognised in ireland under the kennel club, but they have been bred in ireland from some priest for years. here's a picture of my little lady called molly the day after the duck season opened on september 1st last year. -
i agree. the irish brown hare is scarce to say the least and not in the same population densitys that is described here. to be honest i was shocked to see people actually had driven hare shoots in the uk. i know nobody in ireland would even think of the prospect. in most cases the shooting of a hare in ireland in frowned upon. i have even been told that to shoot a hare is bad luck. the irish brown hare though is a beautifil creature. i had the delight of seeing two on saturday and one on sunday morning. my setter on the other hand see much more delight than i when she chases them across th

help with rough shooting
stevoman replied to langouroux's topic in Driven, Walked Up, Rough Shooting
here in ireland mostly we all rough shoot and its folly to do so without a dog. you need your dog to flush opoint or set pheasent , snipe and woodcock. we are lucky here in ireland that rough shooting is mostly the only way people shoot so you have to work really really hard for some feathers but its all worth it. i shoot over a lewellin setter myslef. -
I used to have an English Setter that I used for ferreting she could mark a bunny hole from about 5yrds...she was no good for shooting as she used to freeze the way only setters can and you'd be ready with the gun only to find it was a bloody fly how old was she when she was doing that? Mine is 18 months old now and is running in very hard to control but i have every bit of confidence in her. Im working hard on her and hope she comes along. i made one major boo boo with her though. i shot a rabbit over her a month ago and it has totally confused her so it has.

whats the problom with taking out a 6 month old onece she's with her father to learn off. i have watched my grandfather for years take his dogs out as pups wih older dogs and he always produced top class workers. everywhere i go the dog goes too. dont forget as i said we rough shoot here in ireland. people can think im mad if they like but working these dogs like this hasnt failed any of the dogs yet.
-
no to be honest i dont think im doing too much with her. i watched my grandfather raise springer pups for years and he alwaya had them out with ;him as soon as they where a few months old. in my opinion thats what makes a good dog. in fairness she's not gun shy and her confidence is already through the roof and thats half the battle of having a great dog. i see other people there keeping a dog for 18 months and tip toeing around it and firing cap guns in the air and all the rest, but at the end of the day the pup being out with its father watching him work and seeing birds being shot and enjoy

I'l take a few pics tonite and post them up for ye. cheers stephen

well lads. my 2 does will be coming into season in the next few months and its time i started to worry. i dont want to breed them this year and i dont know anybody around here in ireland that has a vesectimated ferret to "service" them. im aware if they dont breed they can get sick and its not too good for them. any suggestion from you guys would be great. ps - merry christmas!

yeah true they have been breeding the same line for 20 years. he's only down the road from me so thats good. i have been given access to the sire and mother for training the pup so that a big bonus.
-
well folks. i need some advice if there is anybody on the forum that has had any experience. i bought a five month old bitch yesterday as i was shooting over her father all weekend and i found him brilliant. does anyone know is it hard to train one of these setter and also i wanted to know will they retreive or do you have to put mountains of work into them to get them to. i hope somebody here has a good knowlegde of these dogs. thanks stephen

their massive sized jills compared to mine!

i use strw for bedding and they love it espeically this time of year when its getting very cold. on the other side of the the i pour kitty litter in the corners and they do their business there and i just go out and clean it everyday and spray some hutch cleaner on it aswell every second day. its a fairly clean way to keep them.
