  1. Me and herdwick took the terriers ratting on a flight pond. We had a fair bit of sport although the rats were bolting straight into the water and it took a while for us to work it out. Once we started watching the water too we had a few, a couple Ollie caught in the water or I got with the catty and a couple the other dogs caught as they bolted on dry land. The owner asked me to get one of the drakes of the pond too, which was a bonus! Catapults are very handy things! The only downer on the day was an early finish due to one of the best terriers having a near collapse due to the work, the
  2. My dogs are regularly left all day either in the house, in my van or kennelled. It does them no harm, they are walked before and after and are perfectly capable of controlling themselves. They go to the toilet on walks and last thing at night, they could crap in the run if they wanted to but they never have. The key to it is having a routine that they are used to and sticking to it.
  3. That would be good mate. herdwick will probably be out with the pevensey too. Let me know when
  4. Cheers mate, i took my usual hunting mate and his son in law whos just bought an airrifle. They werent quite as well equipped as me and didnt have the extra dog warmth either. They stuck it out though and the lad seemed to enjoy himself, it was a bit of a baptism of fire (or should i say ice) for him as a first hunting trip but he's keen to go again! Nutter!
  5. I love it, its as much about just being there as the hunting for me. That ground belongs to someone i've known forever and we have always gone camping there sometimes up to a week at a time when I was younger. Its a shame how real life gets in the way as you get older! Its a great place, fishing, rabbits, ducks, hares and right next door to the beach so when we go in the summer my missus can go and sunbathe while i have a mouch with the airrifle.
  6. The spent a couple of nights over the weekend camping on a bit of ground thats a bit far for day trips. The plan was to do a bit of duck shooting before the end of the season but that failed due to everything being frozen up and the only ducks that we saw flew over as we all had cups of tea on the go! We did a bit of lamping but full moon frost and no wind meant the rabbits stayed home. The ferreting was better, we did a couple of sets both mornings and had 10 the first day and five the second. Not loads but enough to cover the diesel for the trip! We just used the long nets and Parke
  7. whats wrong with the petrol leaf blower with the exhaust running through the blower Sounds like a blinding idea, is that what you use? I actually have one of them in the shed somewhere? Sounds like the beginnings of a plan How do you get around the multibaffle exhaust? Do you have to make a whole new manifold? Also what ratio mixture do you use? I always seem to be either not getting enough smoke or having loads of smoke but the plug getting oiled up? I even asked my mate to get some two stroke oil for me and he came back with "smokeless" 2 stroke oil Needless to say, it wasnt
  8. My bitch had a similar injury, turned out to be a detached ligament in her toe . £200 later she is one month into a regime of 6 weeks zero excersize followed by 6 weeks of lead walks. Gutting. Does the toe seem loose or flappy on one side or other? Good luck with it
  9. Exactly, what I want is a smokey old pioneer or similar but all I end up with are super efficient smoke free new ones. Guess its just a case of wait and see what turns up. Pictures would still be handy though
  10. Well, thats an emphatic NO then! lol The problem we've had with the chainsaws is that the newer ones we've been using have a slot exhaust which is a pain to fix a pipe to just dont seem to smoke properly, the old ones used to have just a pipe and seemed to work alot better. Any chance of some pictures so i can see what works and what dosent without all the trial and error?
  11. Im sick of trying to keep chainsaw engines running and fancy an alternative. I have heard mixed reports of these things so I would like some first hand advice, are they worth it? Cheers
  12. They seemed to take notice of the horn well, they were spread out at times but worked steadily. Im no expert though, only followed hounds a handfull of times!
  13. The pics were a bit big, these should be better
  14. Having never been out with rabbits hounds I didnt really know what to expect. We had a really good day, the little hounds really worked hard and there were plenty of rabbits above ground. Alot of rabbits were hunted and sighted and one was killed. There were some exciting chases and we were lucky enough to be in the right spot for several of them Thanks to herdwick for the Invite and Ian for the days hunting
  15. JRTxWhippet, best of both worlds!
  16. That looks like fun, if you only need a ferret to flush squirrels from shallow holes and pipes for the dogs then im pretty sure one would be enough although it would be better to keep two and work them alternately. Let us know how it goes
  17. Unless you catch him in the act of nailing a chuck then kicking the shit out of him will do little good.Work, work and more work good luck I agree, he got beat while caught in the act and trying to stop him ragging it. I wasnt there but by the sound of it he didnt let go easily and thats when he got punished. All my dogs kill things regularly, thats what they're for but I have to be able to control what they kill. If i worked on the principle that they are killers then how could i trust the lurchers round sheep etc? His basic training is good, recall, sit, stay, retrieve etc and
  18. how did you break him to stock to begin with? he should just need his memory refreshing. if you can lend a collar or need one for other dogs/training then you could give it a go( make sure he gets used to the collar being on first or he will just not do it when its on always give a command first then the reminder with the collar) he may just get more wound up because of the shock. i think most use a bit of hazel or willow. He broke easily as a puppy, a sharp no and snap the lead and he never took any notice of them til today. I wanted to tie the dead hen to him as i've seen that work
  19. Hes nearly two and gets plenty of work, really i need to re break him to the hens. I cant have a dog thats not sound round stock, mine or anyone elses. He is a hard headed little bugger and physical punishment dosent work well on him. Im not keen on keeping him kennelled all the time as it makes him much more over excited and hard to manage when hes let out, its would also mess with the routine of the rest of the dogs. What are the options for re breaking him, should i consider a shock collar? Ive never used one and never liked the idea but several people have suggested it. Any advice or o
  20. My wife enjoys it on the odd occasion, she'll even go lamping on her own when the mood takes her and bushes whenever she takes the dogs out. She certainly dont want to be out as often as I am, same as im not keen on horseriding everyday but its good every now and again whereas she lives for it. If she wasnt into hunting I dont think she would be able to put up with me or understand why I do it and that would lead to arguements. It all depends on the people involved I reckon, just do what works for you!
  21. Right, my terrier has always been sound around the hens but today he just turned round and killed one. I was out ferreting and got a tearful call from my wife. These hens are her pets and she was absolutely gutted and furious, he got the shit kicked out of him and chucked in the pen. Im keen to nip this in the bud, the hens are loose in the garden and have never had trouble from any of the dogs til today. He has never been trustworthy round the ferrets but this last week he has changed, had a big row with a lab while on a walk, went after the cat when we were out of the room and now killed a h
  22. Good man, they're struggling enough as it is. Any you do shoot wont be worth a rub anyway, feathers and bone and any meat on them will be rank due to the diet of ivy berries. They all over the place down here sat on the ground round the roads slowly wasting away. I've laid off everything bar the foxes for the moment and would happily leave them be too if it werent for the landowner complaining.
  23. I've seen rabbits, and consequently rabbit damage 5-6 foot up trees. Things are bad for them now, grass is covered over and they're starving. I've been holding the dogs back this last week as it dosent seem like sport. Fair enough if your hunting for genuine pest control, especially in orchards as they will be getting hard hit, but sport hunters should be laying off them til the thaw in my opinion. Same with the pigeons, round here the are just dying. Loads sat around on the side of the road just feathers and bone. This weather hits them hard as they cant feed and are burning up tons of calori
  24. Thanks Higgins, hopefully it'll get sorted soon
