anybody hunt a pack of foxhound harriers and if so how do they hunt regards finding foxes, hunting, marking and tongue ????
-
so its been a good discussion so can anyone say who the best pack of harriers or foxhounds they know of are ? Be an interesting topic.........but dont dare mention beagle !!!!!
-
ah well ya see a lot of people on here are only foot hunting and are working men pablo........presume ya mean horsey men with the mounted packs when ya say proper hunting men ! Sure maybe foxbolter is right we should continue the conversation on harrier or foxhounds only........leave the beagle where it belongs ...IN A CLASS OF ITS OWN For out and out hunting the harrier would frighten the shit of out any foxhound by the drive, pace and voice in their hunts. Ive seen foxhounds intimidated by the harrier

what must only happen in Ireland that doesnt happen across the water ? The stretched out hunts definitely happen, ive been there and seen thatand i know men over there that say it happens regular. maybe theres not too many that mix their packs over there, dont know dont care. You must only be talking about little pocket beagles because a lot of fast harrier types in ireland would be smaller than some of the bigger beagles and the best foxhounds i ever saw were tidy, low, heavy hounds. personally we keep big harriers for mountain and fences but i wouldnt speak bad of bea

I know a few mixed packs of beagles foxhounds and harriers and crosses of each also and they run pretty tightly and account for a lot of foxes by hunting properly. I also know of pure harrier packs and pure foxhound packs that are very uniformed in size but are scattered and stretched every day on their hunts so what im saying is keeping one size of hound doesnt solve everything if the huntsman isnt prepared to cut hounds too far in front or too far behind. And that pack that Bryan is talking about with the harriers, harrier x beagles and pure beagles are top class on fox.

Miliken is 100 percent and I understand what he's saying. Harriers can be hard work to manage unless given a lot of running. Foxhounds carry a bit more sense for Fox work and are bred for it. I just said id mention the beagle because a lot of people have them or hounds with a bit of beagle in them and they always look to be an addition.

We hunt pure harriers so do all the packs around us, they suit our country and our quarry...the hare. It's whatever suits ones needs. I would have to see someone's country to see what hound suits them. I'll always be a harrier man but while we're on the subject of hound types I know a pack of beagles that are very effective at accounting for foxes.

i dont want to offend anyone so i hope i havnt............at my stage in life i can assure you theres no chip on my shoulder you obviously know the packs personally that attempted to hunt on the friday irishfoxhunter. I have nothing against anyone involved.........i just compare the hounds to the packs local to me and to be honest im not on my own in my opinions. There was good sound from the packs at times but they couldnt drag a line no length and gave up on it far too quick when they lost scent. Wouldnt at all be impressed with their drive.....didnt come across hungry for hunting, wo -

kinda presumed thats who you were talking about pablo when you first said it. yeah of course he has bad days completely understand what goliath is saying about him and his hounds hunting steadily after a lot of hunting but fair is fair the best should be at the festival and i can guarantee he would of put on some display on the friday this year if he was in the festival given the lovely country and conditions. Would be a lot better to watch than the shite that was there. irishfoxhunter dont be so silly how could anyone advise on what days to go to the festival next year........t -

Well some of the packs in it this year did hunt well enough to catch foxes. If some can do it why cant others ? NOT GOOD ENOUGH Yeah a pack of harriers that would account for fox after fox and theyre not asked to be in it anymore, a pity when you see some of the packs that are asked !! -
Good the bloodlines are obviously showing, if theyre providing good hunting

yeah he was in the festival a few times but his hounds would make good packs look average and bad packs look desperate. Hence the reason hes not asked anymore -
hopefully he suits yous and keeps good sport going. What line of old english are they? i always thought the Laois had modern hounds
-
Is the current huntsman going to another pack? I hope your lucky and keep getting good hunting

I've travelled to England and Wales and saw packs that would open your eyes. I'm a pure harrier man at heart and that's what we all hunt here and their sound can't be beaten but there are fox packs across the water that would show up some of the packs in the festival. Imagine if the organisers only invited the best it'd be some week. -
Nice looking pack. Who are they and what are they like?

i couldnt agree with you more foxbolter, sometimes its great when you have two packs coming together that are both well capable of hunting on their own. BUT having a joint meet affords some packs the protection of saying " it didnt work out, the hounds didnt work well together". if they had a good hound between them it would hunt on and the other hounds wouldnt affect it. and if the new pack they bring are good then they make the shite pack look good ...........................sometimes you see the same pack back time after time having a joint meet with different packs and n -

yeah and we all know without saying what joint meet that was........................i just feel bad for those who travel and then see shite hounds............it could be a fantastic spectacle ...............what i fail to understand is that these packs are not going well at any stage in the season and then come down here and blame country, scent, weather and everything else they can think of but go home knowing the truth -

Bryan ......if your hunting is bad more often then serious questions have to be asked ..........wheres the problem..........hounds...... huntsman........remember one bad hound can ruin a packs hunting...............but if one bad hound is tolerated more often than not the kennel is full of bad hounds anyway because the owner cannot tell the difference.......breeding is important but shite is shite............has the huntsman got bad habits...........if your not getting good hunting...............sort it out and stop accepting it -
any news on how any other packs performed ?
