you are correct. ive had lurchers a long time and all are different, the ones i keep/breed now are pritty true to type, keen and biddable and can be trained to do most things. i only train to the gun

Lets not pretend some Labs wont hit cover like spaniels cause they will and vice versa there are some very good spaniels that can out shine a lab on retrieving, but these animals are few are far betwe

depends on what you want it for, i take my lab onto the marsh and my cocker rough shooting. my mate has a springer he uses on the marsh, she's great retrieves just as well as the lab. but after the fi

Show me a lurcher that can match them at their specific job day in day out through a season and I will happily retract that statement

Show me a gun dog that can match any lurcher in versatility and multi tasking and i will eat hay with a donkey.. :D ..i thought we where on about allround dog's...not specialist's in one chosen game.. :whistling:

you can argue all day that lurchers are versatile I however have never disputed that but the simple fact is a lurcher will never beat a gundog at it's own game and since the OP asked which gundog would be the best all-rounder and this is in the gundog section I fail to see how lurchers have any relevance ;)

The origional poster mentioned gun dog but that could be a russel for all we know.. :D ..at the end of the day a shooting retriever type dog will never beat a good collie cross at it own game and a lot more as far as all round versatility goes... ..retriever's are good for a few thing's lurchers are good for a hell of lot of thing's..so in my eye's the ancient humble lurcher win's hand's down ever time for a good old alrounder..,

perhaps you could point the op in the direction of a litter of well bred lurchers that a beginner could teach to be the all-round gundog that he wants or should we be realistic and tell him he needs a well bred lab that will be a piece of piss to train to do exactly what he wants and when his mates ask what it is he can just say it's a lab rather than guess

Lets throw this into the mix, what does a gundog actually do that is so hard and that a well bred lurcher is incapable of??.

Find game, I would expect a lurcher to find game..

Flush game, as above but obviously is required to catch it rather than flush it . Drop to shot my lurchers did or rather could if that's what I wished..My preference would be that they pinned it before it went anywhere, obviously not a desirable trait in a gundog.

Retrieve, again a quality I would insist on in a lurcher, and wouldn't tax a well bred lurcher..

.The debate could go on forever, for every wayward useless lurcher I've seen, I've seen a gundog the same, we've came full circle here, so a question to any gundog owner, what do you actually think a gundog could do that a well bred lurcher couldn't??.

But theres nobody here saying the lurcher is uesless, its use lads trying to push saying the lurcher is as good as a Lab/Spaniel at Gundog work when thats incorrect. I reckon a Lurcher couldn't go deep back into a wood to look for an injured bird without the owner worrying a deer pops up and its gets coursed across the field infront of a load of guns, i've yet to see any lurcher that works hand signals like a proper gundog( not seen it but wont dismiss it cant be done), i think a lurcher would struggle wildfowling at freezing temps', i've yet to see a lurcher that bashes brambles aside like they are not there and i'm yet to see a soft mouthed one on feather game..................

Lab my bitch can work hand signals as good as if not better than most gun dogs ( plenty on here have seen it ) she is soft mouthed on all game including feather I could send her back for a blind retrieve no problem BUT you are correct that if a deer got up in front of her she would be off across the fields in hot pursuits LOL .........

Good stuff... As said ive never seen it but i would discard it as nonsense. Again this sentence of "better than most gundogs".......i'm afraid that bit is wrong and you have missed out the word "shit" in the sentence..... Can your dog peg a bird and you can let it go again?....
