Recommended Posts

i have just been offered a 12 foot long ferret racer described as rigid piping with mesh Windows cut in to it with four lanes so you can race up to 4 ferrets at one time i am picking it up on sat and will post some pictures of it then has any one else done something similar i think i could be quite entertaining for both the ferrets and people alike the lady that is giving it to me says they used to use it for school fates etc. i think i might open a book at my next BBQ :D

Being honest ive never seen the attraction of taking my ferrets to shows in the summer never mind racing them

I'm not in to the show thing either. it will be a bit of fun and something new for them to do in the garden this summer.

I'm always looking for new ways to keep them from getting bored especially out of season i made a tire swing for them last week a moped tire hanging from a rope in the center of the court they love it and sleep in it to get in to it they climb up the walls hang upside down from the roof down the rope and in they go.

what have other people done for their ferrets

Used to be in a ferret club (long defunct ) & we did the shows . Ferret racing was the only money spinner we had to pay for the petrol . 10p a ticket ,bet on the collar colour. The guy in charge of the club had all the speil to draw in the punters ... The kids loved it . I remember those days -pipes ,cages , show tent and camping gear strapped to the roof of my old Mk1 Escort . I do mean strapped to the roof too. Did'nt have a roof rack!.

My little girls 6th Birthday party ( she's nearing the big 30 now and has savage brats of her own ..... I must stop mis- quoting John Wayne . ) -what better than ferret racing in the garden?

Saw some racing at a show last year . Nothing had changed .Same formula, same 10p stakes . Bores me silly but the tiddlers love it.

Enclosed is an archive picture from the early 80's . Now that is not me in the photo but some may recognise him :hmm::thumbs:

My landlady convinced me to race my ferrets at the village gala this May - (She is on the council and does have to put up with the ferrets in her barn and rabbit skins filling up the dustbin so its only fair :D

I have loads of bits of pipe and things, which the ferrets are used to charging around. Not sure I can come up with anything as tidy as in some of the pictures I've seen on the internet, (and I might only aim for 2 racing lanes), but I do hope folk will like it and it'll make a few quid for the church roof or whatever their collecting for!

If anyone lives near Stirling/Hillfoots, and has a ferret that they'd like to race, its June 13th, and the more the merrier!

i was in a club and we did the summer events and fairs etc.....we did the racing but the real money spinner and the one that got people excited was ferret in a bin (heard it also called ferret roulette) and its easier to organise.

1 bin (a proper sized garden bin)

8 short bits of pipe numbered 1-8

8 pipe sized holes cut in the base of the bin! and the pipes placed in so you have a bin with 8 possible exits at ground level!

then cut 8 pieces of wood as "tickets" and number them to correspond with the pipes.....they hold the "ticket" to show which they picked

pay a pound pick a pipe! if the ferret comes out of your pipe (completely out tail and everything) and you win £4!

which equates to you making £4 each time you run it! and the winner quadroupling their stake to £4........people would really get into it trying to call the ferret towards them and their pipe....offering food, banging the floor, whistling etc......

You need bomb proof ferrets that are easy to handle and wont get upset by people shouting at them.... but ferrets should be bombproof anyway
