BIG, BIG Land,..

Recommended Posts

Alright guys and gals!

The moves coming up, and we will end up with Kansas as our next door neighbour!...that means Coyotes and Hares galor!..lol.

We got the Stags for the Coyotes (three at the moment, but might get another big male or summat to help in the first few seasons on the praire wolfs) and my very good mate down in OK has a nice Saluki bred dog for the wife...he has hunted rabbits and hares his hole life, and has some great hare dogs...i was just wondering what you guys would use on Hares on realy big land?...im guessing many would favour the 3/4 Saluki, 1/4 Greyhound?...the guys out here seem to favour the Saluki blooded types for hares (who dosnt!?) with maybe a little Staghound in there to put a little "umph" into them...there kind of Saluki lurcher types i guess you could call them?..it dont matter what you would call them...they kill hares thats for sure!...

So what would you guys back home favour...until you see the land, you wont be able to imagine it guys...ive never seen owt like it!?...my father in law always used to say "In Kansas, theres nothing for miles and miles, but miles and miles"...lol.

Why not try a pure saluki (coursing bred of course) if the lands as big as you say if nof deffo the 3/4 bred sounds like you'll need a steadier type of coursing dog rather then the faster up and at em type best of luck in finding 1 :good:

Hi Burnie,..

Yeah, theres some Salukis over here, but most (not all) are owned buy KC type people that attend NOFCA events...probably cost a fortune for a pup!..lol...a mate has a good friend that has a Saluki and they are thinking of breeding from it back in the UK...i might beg a pup from that...im not in any rush at the moment...

I remember a while ago, there was a good bloke on here who bred a cracking litter of Saluki types...i think one (Anna and Willow was two of there names i think?) of them killed 11 blues hares in one days coursing at 11 months old...real well bred buy all accounts..i would lOVE to see that type of dog over here in Kansas...im not in any rush, Coyotes are gonne be my thig for a while...then when ive calmed down a bit, i will have a look into some coursing dogs!...i like taking my male Stag coursing...i dont know why, but he loves it and the daft bugger 'aint bred for it!..lol...guess i should tell him!...i wouldnt want to ruin his fun though!... :D

is it actually hares you run or jack rabbits, ive heard they are a lot easier to catch compared to the brown hare,is that right or not.if its not how long can a course on a jack rabbit go on for

I would stick my neck out and say that the hares here (jack rabbits) are faster than the hare back home...but they seem to want to out run the dog more...of course, that could be down the the terrain there run on (much bigger than back home) also, there are three or four types of jack rabbit here, the most common being the black tailed jack rabbit...ive heard that thw white tailed jacks are more of a test though, i havent run any yet..

Out here the hares have much more to look out for...owls, eagles, fox, coyotes, wolfs, bobcats etc...so that has made them evolve into a much waryier creature...

The longest course i have had was near the six minute mark...most being around 2-3 minutes...i havent run Kansas yet though...if you where to give a good january hare there a 100 yard slip, it wouldnt surprise me to see a single dog course for 8+ minutes...

Also, in the southwest, they have probably the roughest, shittest terrain on the planet!...rock, scree, baked lake beds, cactus...we have it all...and you can bet your bottom dollar that hare will take your dog through all of that!...

lol...Hi DW...well, MY......head is bigger than YOURS!..LOL...

I hope i dont start sounding to much like a yank...its funny you should say that though...i nearly blew Kanes and Ratkillas ear drums out when i met them in Roystons kitchen...i guess living in Vegas has made me larger than life...plus im 205lbs now!..lol.

Burnie, thats a very kind offer mate...the problem is, with very well bred coursing pups, usualy comes a high cost of the pup...nothing wrong with that of course, but i have to ship them over and its very exspensive...i might be able to get summat over here, when im ready, or if my mates mate breeds his bitch i might be able to snaggle a pup a little cheaper...it would be good to see what some realy well bred hare dogs from back home would make of these hares and big land though!?...

Sounds like youve answered your own question to me mate........if your stags enjoy doing the job and they are catching thats what I would stick with ...the hares will hopefully keep your dogs very fit and on the button a neccessaty I would imagine for running coyotes....sometimes we all look for that something a little bit special a little bit better and a lot of the time its less than a yard away wagging his tail looking you in the face LOL..... and yes you are a loud f****r I thought you and ratkilla were going to have a shouting competition.lol

Good luck with the move and good luck with the dogs big and small..

Kansas....some where over the rainbow LOL

lol...i know what you mean mate!

Just flew back in from MO...spent a day and half with FR and his family...a big thanks to him for picking us up, and letting us stay and driving us around everywhere!..

The place is LIFTING with game...deer, raccoon, rabbits, possom, fox, coyotes, everything you can think of...i cant wait man!..lol.

Them Stags are bred solely for Coyote, but they are gonna be seeing a lot more of a varity of game, large and small!...lol...i cant wait!..i think i said that already though right?..
