Guest Countryboyo Posted January 16, 2009 Report Share Posted January 16, 2009 Some cracking dogs, so it sems a mix of terrier, spaniel and beagle is the favorite. I have been offered a black and tan bitch puppy, both sire and dam are jack russel based, rough coated leggy terrier crosses and although they are not worked they live at a livery yard and kill plenty of rats and rabbits. Im off to have a look at the weekend. If you go for a terrier go for the leggy type as the short lads struggle with rough ground and rushes and long grass. moonlighter 1,165 Posted January 16, 2009 Report Share Posted January 16, 2009 what you've got to consider is the type of land you hunt and what you want the dog to do when fox or rabbit goes to ground. Terriers are good bushing and tracking dogs but will follow the rabbit or fox down a hole, even if its a badger hole! this can cause problems if you haven't got permission or you dont carry a spade. i owned a terrier once that i could call out, but ive also seen ones that wont come out untill dug till, and not all holes are digable remember, therefore a bigger dog with spanial or beagle may be more suitable. cheers. whin 463 Posted January 16, 2009 Report Share Posted January 16, 2009 ye borders are fine as a lot will not go to ground try a patt or something a bit more prey drive they are alrite for bushing but go to ground , no good ,get a dog that doesnt or cant get in an earth spaniel beagle cross ideal or some little hound type ,done the bushing with terriers no good to much setts and well they took of after deer and well they were just trouble unless you new the ground and had permiss, Quote Link to post

Im really only interested in rabbits and dont want a dog that goes to ground as there are plenty of badger setts about on my permissions. Had a springer before and he drove me up the F*****g wall, they can be over hyper. Also you have to spend a lot of time pulling thorns out of their ears. I prefer terriers but each to their own. webby 31 Posted January 17, 2009 Report Share Posted January 17, 2009 (edited) cockers are great, they work their little hearts out all the time, they have a better nose than a springer but dont have the tracking instinct of hound types. bonus of cockers over terriers is that they want to please you so they will do what you say i.e. you can make them hunt the cover that you want them to hunt.
