Guest oldskool
i think your not far wrong mate.... i only went to one show last year and i couldnt help but notice the amount of "lurchers" that were damn near to being full greyhounds Quote Link to post
milliken 831
your right mate i dont know why they dont go into the greyhound game and make some money at it but then again they are at the top of the lurcher racing game and would be small fish in the greyhound game robert Quote Link to post

labsnlurchers 39
A dog should not be bred for one thing alone, ie it should not be bred for JUST working with no consideration of conformation, temprement and health and visa versa a working breed should not be bred for just conformation/showing qualities. I know this rarely happens but it should be the way every breeder thinks. As a breeder you should do your upmost to produce well rounded healthy pups that will live a full happy and active working life. In this country we have 3 types of working breed, those that are bred for work, those that are bred for show and those that are bred for both, i personally prefer those that are bred for both. If you take labs as an example you have the big fat lumps that frequent the show ring that quite obviously would be out of place in the feild. You have the working labs that are increasingly snipey/sharp and sometimes aggressive and far away from the breed standard and then you get the ones that are able to do both work and show and are close to the breed standard without losing any working ability. macker 5
alot of the shows like that now even worse in england when i was over there. but living in south of ire i know a few plenty of die hard hunters up north who will travel anywhere to hunt their dogs. just have to take the good with the bad. i will say the terrier lads that do well up there can be a click some times with no sign of work at all. sickens me to be honest macker Quote Link to post
jimmy0211 2
my dog tom came 1st for working dog, and 2nd from bull breed. He was in the final but is dog aggressive and was really playing up so to be fair to the others in the show we pulled him out. We were later told tht the dog would have won...and his picture would have been in the countrymans weekly! how gay is that lol Quote Link to post

And if they beat you it can be a little, no ALOT!, annoying! Quote Link to post
milliken 831
your very right in what you say and you will never have a great worker if the movement is not there i would not breed of a dog that has fults ie bad jaw feet weak hind quarter and any one that knows abit about working dog would not breed any bad fuelts into there dogs but working abilty is very hight on the agenda of wants in your line most these show dog that are winning have been breed that long for looks in minded that i belive that would not have what it take to produce the goods in the field but can win a working lurcher show this is really the judges fult for picking out such dogs rarely have there feet got dirty robert Quote Link to post

At a rough estimate 90% of lurchers at shows do not work, but a show is just that a beauty competition, my own lurchers would come 4th if three were entered, however the show enthusiasts ensure the breed and popularity continues, the many lurcher clubs across the country would have long gone bankrupt without the support at shows and those who only work their dogs would not provide the revenue to maintain clubs. The show scene used to be a bit of fun in the summer when the lurchers weren't working but took off big style, sometimes we lose track of this and the win at all cost takes over, this is the down side of any animal shows. Lets not knock lurcher owners just do what we want to do and live and let live, we all have the welare of lurchers at heart. Quote Link to post

A lady there spoke to the judges and had 2 pure whippets thrown out of the LURCHER show when she had what looked to me like a pure greyhound herself then when the winners were announced the judge called the woman by her 1st name cheating b*****ds Quote Link to post
