LDR 29
Does the dog know its place? ie, you're the pack leader, you need to have this in place, before anything else. IMO the dog should look to you for everything, that way once the chase is finished, she should be looking to you to see whats next, which will be you doing a recall and like everyone else has said, rewarded with its favourite treat. I had a bitch like yours and for a while i thought oh well its not like i'm a professional pest controller, but it can turn real bad if they f**k off onto a main road...... Quote Link to post

sandymere 8,263
a dogs not stupid if it realises it can get away with this it will continue when the dog returns put it on the lead and give nhim a bit of a rag ie nip his ear ect let him know your the boss next time he goes off the same thing the dog eventually realises that when it runs off it will get into botherL WOODGA  be careful if you punish a dog when it comes back as far as the dog is concerned it is being punished for returning so will be even less likely to come back! patience and time spent away from game training will help, if you use treats then reduce the amount you feed by the amount of treats as they work better if a dogs a little peckish. and don't give an order unless you can inforce it on the training field! Simoman 110
Personally I would work on the recall away from hunting. Taking ther dog ferreting and then trying (and failing) to recall the dog is just reinforcing the bad behaviour. PM me if you want a couple of ideas as it's too long to type here. As sandymere says the worst thing to do is punish the dog when it returns. Quote Link to post
Guest DogFaceKillah
my dog used to do this alot, but after a while she clicked on she was putting all the bunnes to ground after a slip, she soon realised me her master, new best and set her up for good slips with a better chance of her gettin her quarry, now she has a slip then comes straight back to slip. all i use is a whistle, but try all methods these guys tell you, and find the one with the best results Quote Link to post
dickyboy 1
you say its your wifes dog - is it mainly hers and looking at her as her master (Collies can be a bit devoted to one person) get to know the dog away from hunting and training, just play ball or something in the park till she thinks the world of you then try reward based training, i've found that they may not even need treats as a good word from their master is praise enough particularly collies.....also try silly high pitch voices when praising as this means more to a dog than any word ever will Quote Link to post
