Toka 10
Hi, recently getting back into shooting sports after birth of daughter who is nearly 2 now. we have had akitas as pets for a while now and have only one old male left now and he is 9 yrs old so getting on. we also have two cats in the household. the farms i shoot on seem to have had an upsurge in rats and a small increase in rabbits. i think that in the next year Amber will be up to helping look after, and enjoy the company of a puppy as well as the company a new dog would bring our old akita. [he is very gentle considering the breed and i have no doubts that if introduced as a puppy he would not be the cause of any problems.] i am looking for a companion dog for shooting outings with airrifle and rimfire for rabbits, rats and other vermin. [and if i get back into my running a dog that would tag along for the 3-4 mile runs- another reason a slightly taller dog owuld suit.] i have thought that a terrier type dog would fit the bill, as neighbours have jack russells and Amber gets on with them. i am not a great fan of the smaller terriers though. my thoughts would be towards some type of patterdale, as they are a bit taller and a very bonny dog. my concerns are that a pure patterdale may be too much, in that it would not be being worked exclusively and probably only a couple of times a week out with me for general shooting and ratting. they seem to be quite aggressive in nature as well [but having brought up the soppiest akita i know that is not 100%] not only towards dogs but also cats. i would pay the price with a dog that has too much energy/aggression and it would not be fair on the dog. my first thought is that if got young and introduced properly any puppy should be able to fit into the 'household'. our akita sleeps outside, but has access to the house whenever we are in and it is convenient, and i would expect any other dog to do the same. my parents are suggesting a whippet but i have never really taken to that breed and i am not after a coursing dog, more a flushing dog, one that would not get infront of a gun. spaniels/hpr are out as they are a bit big and also need more exercise than we can offer at the moment. can anyone give advice relating to this....a lot of this will be my own preformed perception of types/breeds and no offence is meant in anything i have put down. my heart is still with the patterdale but my head is veering away for the above reasons and i cant think of any other breed that hits the mark. Guest Countryboyo
Patterdale x beagle or pat x russell or full patt or full large type russell. I reckon a beagle/terrier cross would be the one to get or even a spaniel/terrier cross wouldnt be too big. but any of the above should do the trick. RatSnatcher 0
listening clearly to what you have said Border Terrier, sounds good It took 20mths for my patterdale to settle down to a reasonable working companion. hence my latest pup is a russel x Quote Link to post
Halfinch 51
I agree, Border Terrier is a great dog for what you seem to want it for. Maybe a little biased though, cause i've got one. Quote Link to post
coldweld 65
Border Terrier very good dog ! ideal for what you want . Maybe a little biased though, i've got one and a ess Quote Link to post
Blake 2
spaniels/hpr are out as they are a bit big and also need more exercise than we can offer at the moment. Springer spaniel for gun, unless you want to shoot a terrier. Springers dont need any more excercise than a terrier. Quote Link to post
