Malt 379
Went out today with a few mates, 3 ferrets and 4 dogs. We keep hearing of places around here being 'lifting' with rabbits. The land owners ask us over to sort them out, when we get there, we're buggered if we can find any! Anyway, went to two new permissions today, the first of which was a stables at a place called 'Clarbeston Road.' A good 30 mile round trip to get there, and we saw a mighty impressive 4 rabbits, and we couldn't find any buries that weren't in about 6 ft of cover! The only thing of note that happened there, was both me and my 5 year old son got belts off an electric fence! I got one first, cursed, then turned around to see my boy take a full hold of the rope to pull himself up a bank! I shouted, but the poor little bugger had already caught a firm grip of the rope, and of course, couldn't let go. I had to grab him and physically pull him off the fence. He was a bit shaken, more by me shouting, and was right as rain about 15 seconds later! We then went to the next permission, where the terriers pushed a rabbit out of a hedge, and into another. We shouted the terriers, and directed them towards this large bramble patch. There was a lot of exited yips coming from inside the bush, followed by an ominous squealing noise, result! I waded into the hedge & pulled out a coney, which happened to be the only one we got! We then found a bury that was quite accessible, so we thought that we'd give it a go, as I had one of my young ferrets out, and wanted to try her. We netted up, and I put my mates locater collar on my jill and sent her in. A short while later, I had a quick scan with the Mk1 box, and found that the ferret didn't seem to be moving. I thought the ferret had killed, so I was preparing to dig, and my ferret popped up somewhere else, minus the collar. Seeing on how the bloody things are so expensive, we spent the next two hours digging 4ft through rab to retrieve it, :bang: and people wonder why I don't like using fecking collars & locaters! We then walked round a few more fields, then decided to call it a day. I went back to retrieve the rabbit that we caught earlier, but bugger me, I couldn't find it again! Quote Link to post

Malt 379
bit of a rough day at the office mind you i bet the boy wont be grabbing any more electric fences I must work in the roughest office in the county mate! I love rabbiting, but it's bloody hard work round here, I'm praying for a very, very cold winter to kill off the cover that the rabbits live in most of the year round. I can see us starting to brush cover with the dogs instead of ferreting! jesus Mal.id never go through that for a scabby few rabbits hows yer puppy doing,i have 2 7 week old pats now and another youngster coming in 3 weeks time.....GOD HELP ME The pups good thanks Jig mate! You can never have too many dogs mate, If I didn't live in such a small place, I'd have a load! Quote Link to post

Guest WILF
Had much the same thing lately........they see 2 bunnys and all of a sudden "there are 1000s of em!!" ............at one of the places I do, I just told him to strim everything otherwise its a waste of time. The rest of the time, if its heavy brash I wont bother to try and net anything just try and get bolts for the dog. I think with the much warmer winters that land owners are going to have to cut back the areas they want doing in order to get a result...........its a 2 minute job in a tractor. Feck all will die off untill at least January, you see Good account M and better than being stuck indoors with the old woman Quote Link to post
Keeps 403
Hope the little lad's ok - that can't have been a nice experience for him. Landowners are all the same - they always tell you there are 1000's of them Doesnt matter how many you got, at least you were out and about Quote Link to post
The one 8,592
Sometimes its good fun having a day mooching about instead of dragging all the ferreting gear out , try givening the place a shine with a lamp to get a idea of rabbit numbers there mate Quote Link to post
