rabbiting

Recommended Posts

this morning i had a look out with tess my six year old lurcher and my mate had minnie.

it was a cold start and whilst the dogs were busy hunting good scent the rabbits didnt seem to be there or at least they werent sitting tight and were moving through the reeds ahead of the dogs and not giving them much chance to make a catch.

much of the land we walked over was steep hillside covered in reed and tall grass which makes it hard for the dogs to course and catch on.rabbits running downhill arent the easiest to take never mind with plenty of cover to protect them.

anyway the dogs never stopped hunting for the three hours or so we were out and id say this was a good display of lurchers using their noses.we ended up with sixteen which i think is good going on this place.

i took a photo of the dogs but somehow deleted it so all ive got is a pic of the rabbits.

this afternoon i had a quick look out bushing with Vandal and my gwp pup Alfie.after that i got a little rat with the pointer which helps him to tick over untill i start getting him more work.

cheers lads,

the dogs are pretty fit but i think it has alot to do with the dogs desire to just keep hunting, and a good nose helps.

i guess on land with lots of cover if it cant find it,it cant catch it because theres no-way am i fit enough to go running around flushing stuff out for the dog to course :clapper::clapper:

cheers dave and thanks for the invite out yesterday.i really enjoyed it and it was good to see Fudge has settled in and is hunting well with the other dogs.we should have some fun on that farm when the cover comes down

today i was invited back out for a spot of rabbiting.Tess was a bit stiff from yesterday so i took Vandal with me and my mate had Minnie.

for much of the time my dog was running around like an idiot following minnie about and on several occassions when minnie found a rabbit and stopped still ready to take the rabbit where it sat vandal rushed in and the rabbits escaped.other times he ran in on minnies catches grabbing the rabbit from her.:no:

eventually he started to settle down and showed that if he uses his nose he can find and catch a rabbit.i hope i never grow tired of watching a lurcher hunt up and come on point as it locates its quarry and its particularly pleasing to see young dogs do it.a few rabbits got away from him but im happy at this early stage to just see him hunting and trying to find rabbits.minnie as always put in a good performance and didnt stop hunting.

thanks must go to minnies owner for letting us tag along knowing that my young lurcher would at times be a pain in the arse.

NICE THREAD POINTER ,

THE DRIVE THE GWP LURCHER HAS TO FIND GAME IS OUTSTANDING , LONG AFTER MOST COLLIE CROSSES HAVE FALLEN IN BEHIND THE OWNER GIVING THE TELL TALE SIGNS OF A DOG HAVING HAD " ENOUGH " THE GWP HYBRIDS ARE STILL PUSHING ON ........... , ONLY TWICE HAVE I SEEN ANOTHER LURCHER TYPE WITH A SIMILAR STYLE , BOTH WERE GUNDOG CROSSES ONE WAS SOME LAB CROSSES WHICH WERE MORE DELIBERATE HUNTERS WITH REAL BONDS TO THEIR OWNERS AND THE OTHER SPRINGER CROSSES WHICH WERE HARD TO HANDLE BUSH BUSTING MACHINES

A NICE LOOKING GWP LURCHER YOU HAVE THERE .......... I NOTICED HE HAS THROWN TO A COLOURATION FOUND IN SOME GWP,,,, HAS HE SOME OF THE ROMMEL DOGS BLOOD IN HIM ?

ALL THE BEST
