Good Noses?

Recommended Posts

Just been looking on another forum (nothing terrier related) and someone was arguing the toss about fox dogs not needing good noses. Reason being an occupied earth is full of scent a dog with an average nose will find the quarry whatever.

I would have to disagree with this myself as iv read about numerous dogs being entered in bigger earths before the quarry was found.

What are your opinions?

P.s the argument started after someone talking about using a plummer on Pigs back in the day :whistling:

i have to agree a good nose is THE main attribute to a good terrier .if the dog cant find its quarry then it cant stay,be hard etc. the most memorable days personally are the ones where the dog has found in a large difficult earth till dug to !

A good nose is a must thats for sure but i don't think thats what matters IMO all dogs are born with the same scenting abilities. Its just some dogs have the brain to use it better than others and the real special ones have that little something extra that we can't explain.

the bloke is clearly a tool......... what is point of a dog that cant find its quarry.... true an earth may get full of scent, but a dog knows more about scent then we can even imagen... fresh scent and older scent are very difrent things to a good nosed dog.

intrestingly the place i have had most "good" dogs fail to find is not in big earths but in large wet tyre heaps (mainly smelly sialge tyres).. its a real test for a nose and shows up alot of apparently well nosed dogs....... perhaps this mr plummer chap should try it!! :whistling:

An earth might be full of scent but a good dog can read it like a book.Watch a pack of hounds pick up a line and not only follow it but know which direction its traveling by the scent getting stronger or weaker.A dogs sense of smell is like our eye sight,a room might be full of people but you can still pick out a certain person. A terrier without nose would be about as much use as tits on fish!!

thats the most annoying thing when a dog runs the wrong way down a scent and the fox is off in the opposite direction.

nose is at the top of the list for me. also beddies have the best noses of the terriers.
