jazz_11 5
well, i bought that deben mark 1 ferret finder for 50 quid with 3 collars (i originally thought 2) and a ferret box for 50 quid.. i got told it was a good deal and to be honest i am really pleased, its all in good condition the finder has still got its original box. you cans ee it has been well looked after. BUT the box says its 8ft, but on the wheel it goes up to 15 so i assuming its 15 foot. i took off the back cover to see if it had a battery in, and it didnt, and on the wheel it says mk 3 so i am wondering if the wheel has been replaced for a 15ft mark 3 wheel (if there is such thing).. i am just wondering if this is normal, and how does the locator work, i no its not rocket science, but what i am wondering, lets say i am searching for ,my ferret, now i know that people attach the box to a stick so it gives you greater reach when searching for the ferret. but if i put the wheel all the way down to 15ft and the ferret is only at 2 foot will it still pick it up.. and once i have found where the ferret is how do i know what depth it is at... also how do i tell if it is a genuine 15ft or a 8ft.. overall i am really pleased because i think it was a bargain.. the guy i got it off was a mate of mine but it wasnt his, he was selling it for a friend who went on holiday lol. he himself has never used one so he was no hel to me. thanks jazz Edited July 18, 2008 by jazz_11 Quote Link to post

The one 8,589
Apperntly there where 11 versions of the old mk1 made thats why the wheel has mk3 stamped on it ,how many batteries does the collar take to work out the depth Quote Link to post
stubby 175
if i put the wheel all the way down to 15ft and the ferret is only at 2 foot will it still pick it up.. and once i have found where the ferret is how do i know what depth it is at... jazz, turn the unit on and as you say, at the 15ft mark, anything between that is detectable, so even if its only an 8ft collar, and you ferret is at 2ft it will still "knock" your then home in on the point its knocking at, by slowly turning the wheel down, so you'll eventually be able to place the box on the soil with it knocking, but moving it away will stop it, now simply look at the wheel to see what depth the ferret is at its easier to do it, than describe it Quote Link to post
jazz_11 5
yh thanks stubby mate i planted a collar in the garden earlier, only at about 2 and a half feet and it found it no prblem well when i say no problem, i dug down for it bet went to deep and couldnt find it so i used the locator to find out where in the soil it had landed but i found it.. i also put a collar at the top of the garden and used the locator to find it... but with the 8ft collars, when i go over 8ft it goes all fuzzy abit like when you lose a signal on a radio it sounds a bit like that that.... is that normal.. thanks for the help everyone. higgins 75
if i remember right,an 8 foot collar had one battery,a 15 foot collar had two due to the extra transmitting range, do some some tests on both collars and see where they correspond on your receiver box,you may find that they differ. Not sure what you have been sold, but it sounds like a 15 foot box with an 8 ft and 15 ft collar, atb, Higgins. Quote Link to post
PETEWINN 5
The depth is controlled by the collar. In simple terms if the collar takes one battery then it is an eight foot collar, if it takes 2 then 15'. The collars will take one of 2 types of batteries, either the smaller 393 ones or the large 357 type. The only difference between a 8' and 15' finder is the sticker. If using with the opposite collar then you just half or double the distance accordingly. Quote Link to post
will.f11 24
can you locate ferrets above ground with the deben finders Quote Link to post
stubby 175
can you locate ferrets above ground with the deben finders yes you can, but only to the same length as in depth, ie, 16ft or (mk1) 8ft, plus if its above ground, then its probably moving, and I find locators can then be a little irratick, if the ferret is "moving", another reason Im using the loca8tor lite in conjunction with my mk3, as it gives you 400ft line of sight detection Quote Link to post
