ashales 0
Hi chaps Was'nt sure where to post this....... My sister called the other day to tell me she had come home from work to find a fox eating one of her Koi carp, it had some how 'fished' it out of her pond I was surprised to say the least,is this common? She would like to get rid of said fox, what would be best solution? She lives in built up area so shooting it not an option I'm new to this forum and enjoy reading all the great stories keep em coming Quote Link to post
SEAN3513 7
well............. never heard that before!!!! i suppose trapping/snaring would be your only option..........baited with koi of course!!!! regards sean Quote Link to post
alimac 882
id say it was more likely that the koi jumped out of the pond as it had parrasites on it.. (im not being funny here) it happens quite regularly (jumping out of ponds) not saying a fox couldnt take one from the top either Quote Link to post
Fidgety 8
Most of my Koi jumped out when the water wasnt right. Quote Link to post
Guest JohnGalway
I know foxes are inventive and adaptable but I'd have a very hard time believing it went fishing. I'd go along with the idea of the Koi jumping out and the fox happening upon it Quote Link to post
ashales 0
Thanks for all reply's the fish jumping does seem feasible Quote Link to post
Simoman 110
I agree with Alimac, I keep koi and is almost impossible to catch them with a net so I'd find it hard to beleive that a fox scopped one out, either it jumped or it was a floater......... Quote Link to post
dickyboy 1
my dog caught the back end of a mates koi, i don't know who was more shocked though........i'm pretty sure he didn't expcet to get it!!! A patient fox would catch one!! Quote Link to post
Waz 4,301
Is the pond oxygenated/aireated? In the warmer weather there is less oxygen and carp tend to jump to provide thereselves with extra oxygen. Another reason maybe carp bottom feeding if you dont have bottom filters in the crap at the bottom loved by larvae etc, then the fish can end up jumping to clean out gills. Quote Link to post
comanche 3,309
To catch the fox a cage-trap is the obvious option if it really comes to it...As to whether the fox caught the fish.I thought dedicated Koi ponds tend to be deep so a fox would have to be quick and firm-jawed to nab one on the surface. Not impossible but a bit of a specialist party-piece for old Ginger. If the pond is of the garden golfish type then he might have a better chance of scooping one out or getting a bite in.After all ,foxes hunt frogs and eat frogspawn so they are not adverse to wet feet. More likely ,as everyone says, either the fish jumped out in excitement or due to weather/water conditions or possibly a heron dropped it .Had a dog that used to flip minnows and golfish out of my pond with its paws. .Until I actually saw it I was convinced I'd been raided by a cat. Malt 379
Has anybody else wondered if Mr Foxy may have disturbed a heron, about to tuck into the Koi? Has your mate had any grief off herons? Quote Link to post
