Guard Dog

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I live in a very remote place and have decided that i would like to get a guard dog!

I have 2 bull x's a spaniel and a patterdale that i would like to know are in safe hands while i am out working?

Also at night i would like a dog that would scare the shit out of someone if the came snooping around.

All of my dogs bark a bit when they hear somthing but i realy want a deterent to put people off my place?

Your views would be much appreciated

hello gary,...dont take this the wrong way,......i dont know you or nothing about your experience with dogs, but if you are asking, what guard dog to get....are you sure you are ready for a 'guarding type dog'

take you time and do alot of research,.......guard dogs are not 'toys'

Hi all, thanks for all the reply's,

In response to your reply, i have been around dogs all my life and when i was younger we had some very heavy dogs that could do a job!!!!!!!!

The reason i started this thread is because i want some opinions and advice from people that may know better than i?????

As for traing dogs it is somthing i take very seriously and mine are up to a very high standards in what they do.

Now i hate to say it but i'm not a rotti fan, and if i could have any dog it would be a pit as i admire them over most, but as i cant! it is advice i need and maybe pointing in the right direction of a good breeder or two?

The dog will be in a run in front of my house and kennels and because i now work for my self it will get as much work and exercise as the rest of the pack.

Many thanks Gary

Bad think is with Akitas they have a tendancy to roam and they are aggresive with other dogs which it would be guarding.

Thing is mate the dog was the only dog free to roam,...the dogs he was gaurding had to be kept well away from each other

Hi Gary,

If you decide on a shepherd or similar I may be able to dig up a number, the problem with working shepherds etc its a little like working terriers, they aren't always easily available unless you will work them in competition and can cost some coin. I remember buying a pup in 1999 for £500 and I'd been on a waiting list and "checked out" by the breeder.

A few people always point out that a thief will not be stopped by a guard dog because they could 'just shoot it'. Ive heard this said a few times on forums in the past. And it is true to a point a suppose but like sky-cat said its not very heard of and also even if the burglar/attacker/thief was armed then he would have to be bloody quick at gettin hid gun out, aiming and firing before a good guard dog was ragging him like a little bunny :-)

Im a fan of the cane corso and presa canario breeds but i also like alot of the crosses that are about, like the presa/cane corso, and that mastiff/rotty above is a crackin dog.

What is the point of all this .You get your guard dog think the world of it as you naturally would. Some lowlife comes to rob you or worse ,the dog bites,The "law" Will put your dog to sleep. You'd be better of with 3 or 4 dogs that make one hell of a racket that nearly bite but not quite and they don't have to be big.I'd hate to lose a dog for biting scum ...just my thoughts.

:good: Spot on P1. Publicly owned Dogs - no matter what the cause or situation - simply aren't allowed to bite people in uk today.

I've long since proscribed a few nice, yappy terriers myself. So bloody busy they can be at the front and back of a property all at once. Nothing gets past their attention. Nothing can shut them up. Absolute b*stards to do anything about without raising hell yeself. And not many courts would take notice of a nipped ankle for an intruder.

Gather yeself three or four " Jackers " and give them a job they can get on with for life. They'll stop anyone getting at ye better quality stuff - or they'll sure as hell tell You to get out there and stop them ;)

I know the Caucasian dogs were used a lot as patrol and compound dogs in the Soviet Union and many eastern block countries but their are only a handfull in this country so you are limiting your options. Also they don't have the trainability of many of the traditional guardian breeds and have reputation of being a little "sharp".

I personally think any dog will guard, i grew up on a farm , our dogs weren't overly socialised and were wary of strangers, result they barked and growled at strangers, it would put off any opportunist thief and allowed you to know that people were around and go out to see what was what. My old Lurcher was kenneled near the back door, she was used to people coming up past her kennel to the front door, however on the few occasions that people didn't follow the path and either walked round the back of the house or climbed a fence, she would go ballistic

I think what ditchshitter said is a lot of sense, a few small yappy terrier types make a reasonable security system and unlikely to land you in court for having a dangerous dog

whatever you get, only introduce it to close family and friends, dont exercise it in busy area's and it wont like people it doesn't know
