Ferret Info Needed

Recommended Posts

Mate has 6 ferrets - 4 jills 2 hobs.. now this is his first year and they will hopefully breed if not already, few questions he wanted me to post

1. Is it ok to keep 1 hob and two gills in the same hutch when it comes to mating?

2. Roughly what time of the year do they breed.

3. It the Jills become pregnant should they be separated into there own hutch?

4. Any extra supplyments \ food etc to be given ?

Cheers

1. yep no probs the hob will mate with the 2 jills in turn

2. they will start to come in season anytime from now untill may

3. you can leave them in the same hutch if they have been together for a while .... i have had up to 4 jills all having young in the same hutch .... remove the hob though

4. just give plenty of high protein meat ... ie rabbit etc and make sure they have plenty of water and good dry bedding ..........

as already answered, but will add, if you want to keep records of breeding, say for next years breeding, then split the jills up, I left my 2 jills together, and of course they act as midwifes to each other, one minute all the babies were together the next minute they were in seperate nest boxes, means you cant keep track on who's who, not so bad if they are sisters (jill mums) as all off spring are cousins, but if theres a particular trait you want to keep in the breeding record, then you'd need to split the jills

maybe too technical for some to worry bout, prob just me

1 I would only keep one hob with 1 jill because then you know the job will be done, if you want two jills bred this year then do it twice separetly with the same boy.

2 Ferrets can come into season from end of febuary till end of april, normally but ferrets can comeinto season at different times.

3 Yes so they can do there own thing with the kits, if you want a higher chance of survival.

4 Baby food is good, or miced rabbit.

:clapper: Come to think of it, I've never seen a polecat bother to gut & skin an animal either! Just chuck the lot in whole.

I tend to gut in the field, makes them lighter to carry, plus leaving guts in, stinks, but once home, feet and head chopped off, fits in my chest freezer better, skins/fur left on, saves them icing/sticking together, as each rabbit (daily) is taken out and defrosted, it is skinned, the jack russel has the hind legs, the rest is chopped up, into chunks, inc kidneys/liver/heart/lungs and put in large bowl for the ferrets (9 in the court) the reason for this, rather than chuck in whole is simple, I want them all to feed, chucking in whole would mean the more dominant ferrets get feed first, leaving the others with less

i have been around ferets all my life mate and i have never come accross this ... i put a carcass in and they all gather around and eat i have never witnessed ferrets bullying others off the feed ... i have had up to 20 odd ferrets of differing ages and they have all just cracked on and eaten whatever has been put infront of them with no squabbles at all ........

I think this baby food ideas from these american sites & books, i have read people say before they feed ferets babay food, christ knows why , but there you go

I agree Kay, i think its from the american stuff. They get them use to such things as duck soup and baby food from day one.. because they have so many health problems and poorly ferrets there. They often are too ill to eat proper food and most of them have never seen raw meat. They seem to think it has too many bugs.. bacteria and the like..
