Been known to actually jump in a boat Kev. There was a chap we called Walkie who own one of the licensed boat it Totnes and his boat was mooed up just above Totnes old bridge. He would never believe a salmon would jump in a boat, well one day a chap came it the pub and said just watched a Salmon jump in your boat from the bridge. He thought he was pulling his leg. In the end he went down and checked the boat sure enough the fish was in the boat.

Cheers Arry

Back in the day I picked cockles for a living. It was seasonal about five months of the year. It was  a get rich quick game and it attracted lots of crazy people. There were gangmasters paying illegal

Great stories lads. Personally I grew up right beside an estuary and at one time or another as youngsters we tried absolutely everything to get a few bob. We dug bait, raked cockles, picked winkles to

This has all ended now, we got out on the last season with this crew, the old boy who ran this boat is no longer with us, lived into his 90s a family friend as my mum grew up in Topsham and we were al

I always wanted to try Haaf netting as a kid,I knew the perfect place,it looked a lot more predatory than Gill netting, but the idea of standing stock still for a while actually in the water a visible target for the bailiffs put me off.I think back then I took salmon with every method known to man,I was always experimenting but Gill nets got the big numbers,I started with a small net made some cash then learnt to hang sheet netting and progressed.Nothing is better than seeing or hearing fresh run fish jumping at night.I have seen and fished some incredible salmon the last few years but if I could turn the clock back to just one tide and fish as a small school kid I would jump at the chance.

Would you never chance one or two nights a year? I get the more of a thrill now shooting a net at my age than I ever have. Having a smoke and a chat with my pal while we do a drift they are times that no money could ever buy

I wouldnt like to have your body washed up in my haaf net. Lots of people including kids drowned in my lifetime on the Solway. I've haaf netted over fifty years. Used to be good fun and you could earn a few bob, but even in the old days it was only beer money.

Going way back, before the war it was possible to make a living in the summer months.

It's all catch and release now and not many are willing to risk their neck for no reward. I still go but I pick my tides and weather conditions. It's a young man's game but I just like being out there.

Half netting reminds me a little of dip-netting when the fish are running.
