To follow a professional stalker trying to hit his cull quota was tough. I really wasn't sure what to expect, so kept an open mind. Donnie is in his late 60's, but he can move up the steepest glen like the very beasts we were stalking. Driving the bottom roads, pausing to gaze up, and as soon as deer were spotted we were going up, vertical, direct, no paths, no routes, just direct. On a couple of stalks, Donnie would say " this isn't going to be fun", and boy was he right..! Gralloched where they fell, it fed the foxes on the hill. Some of the poorer specimens were split to feed the eagles and foxes. Who, I was told were now struggling in the Glen's, because of the lack of sheep up there. Bringing the beasts down wasn't fun either. Just hook em through the bottom jaw and drag. Bring careful they don't gain momentum and level you, or worse still, flying past, dragging you over an edge..! He could/would do this up to six times a day if needed. Thankfully taking me with him, we only ever managed three times once. I've never been so tired. The deer were taken back to be hung in a cold room on the estate. Then Donnie would take the heads and feet back. Climbing the hill, to again feed the foxes and the eagles. Nothing was wasted. It all had to balance... That’s fantastic mate, great stuff 2 Quote Link to post
