Newcastle is a one club city, as is Sunderland. To me, Derby’s are between clubs in the same city. A great rivalry, yes ; but a “derby” ? No . Cheers.

I don’t make that right eh , the cities and fan bases are that close and of equal standing , IMHO it’s a proper derby . what derbies would there be if the city boundary was the limit ? Does that make arsenal vs Leyton orient a derby ? United vs Oldham ? Birmingham vs Walsall ?
gnasher16 31,122
I almost feel sorry for these 1 club cities who dont have a "derby "......a rivalry is one thing but a proper derby where theres banter in the local pubs and workplaces is something else....neighbours at loggerheads I was glad to see Sunderland get up they are a big enough club to be in the premier league, rather them than Sheffield Utd,Bristol City etc Come on the O's tomorrow !! How can Arsenal ( North London ) and Leyton Orient ( East London ) be a derby ?..........BIrmingham/Villa yes.....Wolves/West Brom yes.........you cant go around just making up derby games they are what they are based on history and tradition as well as geography.........Newcastle/Sunderland might be a rivalry but its not a derby game. Exactly that , based on history and tradition , as much as it pains me that makes the north east derby the second biggest in Britain . Far bigger in both aspects than these new found rivalries pushed by sky
