No, I wouldn’t say they were the same; similar but not the same.

Probably all came from the hunting dogs of the Fertile Crescent, but changed and adapted to the terrain and climate of the particular environment.

As they went north into Central Asia they evolved into the heavier coated Tazi, Afghan and even into the Borzoi.
Into the west they evolved into the Galgo , Ibizan and some types of Poenco and other types.

Theres a school of thought that the north European running/hunting dogs , the so called “Celtic hound” such as the greyhound, deerhound and the original Irish wolfhound, were a different type.

Interbreeding with each other has muddied the waters….the Spanish galgo was probably bred from Arab dogs during the Arab rule in parts of Iberia, but, in my mind , also has greyhound in its make up ! The Chartpolski, or Polish hound could be a mix of Arab and Celtic hounds, I don’t know.

People will disagree with my assessment, that’s fine, we can’t even agree where the whippet came from, a breed only around 150-200 years old, never mind the saluki types that are thousands of years old !

Cheers.

your there or thre sbouts

Salukis and greyhounds were crossed together for an extremely simple reason……to get a coursing dog with the speed of a greyhound and the staying power, stamina of a saluki.

The best of the progeny were mated to each other and greyhound and saluki blood was added as and when needed.

Of course there was other blood in there, even Bedlington ! But its predominantly saluki and greyhound.

Cheers.

the speed difference between the 2 is minor chart top speed will be roughly the same if you pop with max this season i’ll pop you around a few blokes decade your senior that was there when it’s was happening with the dogs and running the hares well the saluki greys touched in the lines we have today anyway
