no mate your way off the uk saluki was coursing our hare regular since late 1800s

not like now

it’s the sand when you run on the beach it’s taxing so is the slop

So you're saying that the salukis over here are down off the dogs from the 1800's, I doubt that mate? Lol

A pic of a few dogs owned by London lads in the past. The white bitch was the litter sister to the great grand dam to lucky the dark destroyer i believe. The brindle bitch was a fx saluki greyhound.

No better feeling than bringing a dog on from a pup...giving them a spin at 10/11 month old and  watching it take it's first rabbit/fox/deer etc...no drug comes close Neck😔

I run probably the worst two lurchers in Essex lol saluki bull grey I posted a pick few pages back then got deerhound greyhound x collie greyhound  they do what keeps me happy

Show me the lines that are being worked over here that trace their lineage back to UK dogs from 1800's?

I get your point about them being suited to the slop due to them running heavy going sand in Arab land but it's not because they have adjusted to our land through centuries of selective breeding. Lol

I'd say most that are here are down off relatively recent imports?

The crossing of the saluki and the greyhound was done for one reason and one reason only; to get as near the stamina of the saluki and as near the speed of the greyhound.

Much the same as the non-ped whippet is the result of judicious breeding together of the whippet and the greyhound, to get the size of the whippet and the speed of the greyhound.

I said years ago that maybe it was time for the coursing bred dog and the non-ped whippet to be recognised as breeds in their own right, after all, both their “pedigrees “ can be traced back many generations.

Not recognised by the KC, I hasten to add, that would be the death knell for both breeds !

Cheers.

But why would they do that if the saluki is canine perfection for hunting game like hares, deer, gazelle? I do agree with mC in as much as men crossed what they had at the time, if the gene pool of saluki's was very small or non-existent then the natural step would be to cross with a greyhound, or a lurcher.

It was done to suit the ground, quarry and conditions in this country.

Cheers.

I'm not sure a greyhound would do that mate? Lol

A saluki clearly has hunting brains, isn't that all you really need when running hares?
