St Edmunds. Rochdale

I was recently given the opportunity to visit and look around st Edmunds church in Rochdale. I found it interesting so I'll add some photos in case anyone else does. I'll do it as a few different posts as i go along and get time tonight.

St Edmund was Englands first patron Saint and apparently there is a group trying to re-establish him as such. 

As you enter the church st Edmund is shown on a carving above the door. He was martryd after being killed by arrows by the Vikings. It was commissioned by Albert royd a local industry magnate in 1873. 

It was built at massive cost of £25000. At the time a normal church cost £4000. Somewhere in the old testament it gives a description of the perfect way to build a temple, this description is taken from the specifications of king Solomon's first temple in Jerusalem.  It was built of a plinth of rough cut stone on a mound and to the scale of Solomons temple. Around it are two bands of pink stone from the holy Island of Iona. 

Around Rochdale there are 5 spired churches. If you mark them on a map they map out a pentogram. St Edmunds sits in the middle of that pentogram. St Edmunds is a lantern church, meaning it's not spired but has a big square top allowing light to flood in at certain times into certain areas.

Albert royd was a freemason and obsessed with symbolism. The church is full of it. 

This stain glass window shows Adam and Eve. It's full of hidden signs and symbols. But one of my favourite parts is the serpents face....it's actually the face of the local liberal MP

Not one single nail in this roof! It's made from cedars of Lebanon. Imported from the holy land. Albert also imported saplings from Lebanon to his estate in Worcestershire to grow and be available for timber should repairs be needed. Unfortunately the trees have a presavation order on them so repairs have been done in other timber. I'm sure the trees could of been used and more saplings planted as Albert wished.

It was bon the verge of being sold.....to....THE LOCAL MOSQUE!!!!

Luckily it was stopped and a group of interested individuals have taken it over and are hoping to protect and renovate it. I guess that's the point of my post! How can we allow stuff like this go to ruin. Even with billions of pounds stuff like this couldn't and wouldn't be achieved or built today. Shows how far we have fallen.

The brass alter thing is now registered as a piece of listed public art and protected for the nation.

Its a sad place we are living in now, our history and identity is being systematically erased, without our history we have no identity. Even bad parts of our history are there to remind us,

I've never really looked at stained glass before but this one blew me away. What we are, or were once capable of.

The window in the royds private chapel attached to the church. I think the man sat down in the center one is supposed to represent Hiram abiff, architect of Solomons temple but it's actually Albert royds Face. His own architect is the face of the man stood next to him, who is supposed to represent Hiram king of tyre. The plans he is holding are, I think the plans to temple church in London. 

Lots of pointing in each window, all the points leading to masonic symbols. 

The two pillars in the bottom pic at the entrance to the private chapel are marked J and B. Again symbolic to masons representing the porch way or entrance to Solomons temple.

History would have you believe they built that with hammer and chisels couldn’t even build it as good as that in this day and age with all the machinery and tools …. If you actually stand back and admire it fully it’s unreal craftsmanship

Very interesting I heard many churches in Rochdale are now mosques crazy how the church gives them up just like that you can guarantee Islam wouldn't give a mosque up

So Albert royde Street must be named after this man then I never knew
