Sausagedog 7,381
Doubted about 17 hmr for years. Today I shot 9 squirrels with the 455. Nothing remarkable there but this farm has been plagued with crows. Today I gently poked around some round bales my rifle to bring about on a field full of crows pecking at drilled grain. The wind was not quite but mostly on me. I proceeded to shoot four crows, one after the other. Some left but some stayed. They couldn't of heard the rifle down wind from them and also they just ignor the crop scarer they have been listening to for months! The closest was 75yd or so. The far one 130yds or so. All just aim on. The few birds that stayed at 200yds I was just missing, I just could not judge the wind but all of them were very close! Now had I been there with a 22, in that wind, i don't think I would of got four, one at best. last night was a disaster out with the 457. I was homing in on a barking fox and noticed a hare where I usually see one. I was using a dim light and to my shock as I hastily passed the hare I realised it was in fact a fox down low in the grass also listening to the same dog fox! It legged it a wood but paused to just give me a look through the scope. It's a whopper of a fox too. What a muppet, a sitting duck it were oh well.... FOXHUNTER 5,021
I never use my HMR, should really get out with it a bit more and see what I can do with it, but it needs a zeroing session 1st. Reading about that fox reminded me of 1 a few months ago where I shot a fox and then lamped some eyes in the rushes in front of me , like you I thought it was a hare but when I got closer, no rifle on me it turned out to be another fox stood looking at me at about 40 yds Just been out on 2 farms and not a fox to be seen , massive temperature difference compared to Friday night when it was freezing , tonight 11 c. 1 Quote Link to post

Yes, when I was out Saturday night I actually felt the warm front arrive! It felt weird. Like fan heater had been switched on. I shall not be making that mistake again. I will confirm it is a hare from now on!! Quote Link to post

Crows, jackdaws and rooks. No meadow pipet or lark nest is safe from them all come spring. I just wish I could get nearly all of them! 3 Quote Link to post
FOXHUNTER 5,021
Too true Mr Sausage , it's all out war on corvids for me too seeing as we have Curlew , Lapwing and Grey Partridge. Magpies , crows and jackdaws get no reprieve. Jay's also to protect Song Thrush ,Bullfinch and dunnock. 3 Quote Link to post

Same here. Cracks me up how some say crows are solitary. How come when I'm decoying corvids crows are the majority shot? 1 Quote Link to post
