chartpolski 28,497
Hi, There's a report about a "black panther " on the loose in Wales, today, accompanied by the usual blurred picture; But what caught my attention was the picture of the footprints; Now, I'm certainly no expert on big cats, but my understanding is they all walk with their claws "sheathed", with the exception of the cheetah. This pic seems to show the claws. Whats your take on it ? Cheers.

They use the claws in soft ground as well mate like a running shoe with spikes this is a leopard print from India on soft sand, the one in the wales pic does appear to have three lobes on the back pad which would lean it towards being feline

If you have a cat in your house watch it walking when it’s wet or muddy, there is some quite exciting dna technology coming through were they can take soil samples and get dna from what’s walked on it and water samples that can tell what has drunk from it so I think soon you will be able to take a scraping from a track and get dna confirmation, if we had more proper snow we would be able to track on it and get dogs on the scent but alas it’s not to be and this is about as good as you ll find, most of the tracks I’ve ever found are also sadly on footpaths or gateways as cats follow the path of least resistance and as a consequence soon get walked over by everything else even that track in the snow has a dog print with it and in 24 hrs it will be gone
