didnt they bring in restrictions in N.Z on owning ferrets...?

must admit i loved the place when we went on holiday ..

Yes Tomo you are right there are rules around the keeping of ferrets in NZ & only a very small number of operators have them now ,a great cry from yester year when they were  kept by plenty.  Yes 3 coons known as all of the following /possums ,tree monkeys ,coons are about a 12lb animal that climbs & feeds on plants and trees which it can climb straight up aided by huge craws and a tail that works like a extra leg.For a small terrier they are a test, very tuff  & fight like hell using big teeth to hang on with .My dogs are not allowed to target them,in fact are trained to only target Hares and rabbits as dogs enjoy a battle & can go coon mad targeting them over every thing else, that wouldn't suit me .In some aspects the sport is the  same as in your country and in others its so different .

Your lucky to be able to control possums, they are native/protected here.My whippets hate them and while rarely killing rabbits they rip possums apart and pluck the fur off them if they catch one at home. The possums can really mess up your home if they get into the roof as you would know.

Yes I have run trap lines of up to 100 leghold traps both for the valuable fur and the great dog tucker they provide .

Cool, they'd give the little terriers a job,my Parson hates them and I reckon he'd be good at finding/treeing them for a job as he does this in the house yard.

Ted the turd cooling off. He's very hard to live with but you can't help liking him, lol. He's killed over 30 brown snakes,he's just good at it ,where I lost my other terriers to them.He fought my pit/Am bulldog for 5 mins and was covered in blood by the time I separated them, none was his, lol.

I can clearly see Ted holding his tail well up is full of him self & keen to take on the world .

I remember walking into Toke about 7:30 one morning to buy a pint of milk, and there was a pub, the Blue Lagoon I think it was, long gone now, and it was full of bushmen, farmers, Maoris, etc, all drinking.

I went in and it all went quiet. The barman was a Maori , that big he made Jonah Lomu look anorexic ! He asked me where I was from, I told him I'd just come from Saudi Arabia and was visiting family. That broke the ice,

I had a couple of Lion Reds and a bacon sandwich for breakfast then bid them fairwell and walked home.

My sister in law is a bit prim and proper, and when I told her where I'd been, she almost had a fit ! " nice people don't go in those places" she told me , with a scowl !

I rather enjoyed it ! LOL !

Cheers.

you were well and truly in bro land there sir ,one wrong word and you may of walked into the toilet only to be carried out and spending time in a hospital bed ,however they clearly thought you were only a mad harmless pommy .lol

I got him off fox hunting people, they brought in the parsons as the other russells were more digging dogs and the people hunt rocky creeks mostly and want them flushed.I don't know what lines but he is from workers. He is a total cnt but gentle with the grandkids.

First time I was down there, I was walking the mile or so from Tokaroa to my family's house around dusk and the fields were crawling with rabbits.

I said I'd be sneaking over the fence that night if I had a dog and a lamp with me, my niece said no need to be sneaking about, just ask the farmer, he'd be glad for you to kill all the rabbits you wanted !

Bit different to here !

Cheers.

we stayed at Taupo for a short time not far from there charts....

second time we just hired a camper and did the hole of the north island ....

you live on the south island toolbox?

I thought the kiwis were missing a trick not hunting possum at night with small treeing hounds or whatever. The lad I stayed with used to use his springer spaniels to find and kill them in the woodpiles. Seemed not many folks were fussed about small game so it's interesting to read about a kiwi that is.

Tbh I'd expect any earthdog from over here to murder possums. You could have a bit of fun at night though I thought.
