si brown 8,486
dont post my outings very often but this one shouldn't get my windows put through! moved my jobs about this week as my backs knackered and my foxing mate has taken today off as well so we arranged to meet up ridickulesssy early, im not a big fan of cheap flight time hunting missions. walking from the parking point we both had a game plan.. my mate had been tipped off by one of the farm lads as to seeing Charlie a couple of times in the same place and ive encounters with one a couple of hundred yards away that is always on top of me usually when I have a rifle in my hand, ive literally walked into it a few times.. dont know who it freaked out the most me or him and its got to be a him by the size 10's he strides about in. this is my ambush point and my mates hugging the tree in the centre of the photo, I can see him through the thermal.. he likes to get his fox! I was twenty yards at a push from the corner I was expecting him to walk round and scanning most of the time with the thermal all over the spot but saw nothing.. the wind was perfect and my cover was good as I had rabbits bouncing round me! my mate saw his fox and was ready to get on it when it just turned 90'0 and trotted of to the opposite hedge line and continued with his patrol.. 70ish yard with a shotguns no good so he'll be getting picked off over the weekend, left him a few treats to keep him interested in the area. when the light had broken through and the thought of catching up with one had gone we met up and did a bit of first flight crows dug into a hedge line, they land in the pigs and dont last long the action never really got going as there shot at quite a lot most weekends.. this is one of the reasons for shotguns as it would be home time as soon as the suns up with a rifle! one of the grass fields has been cut so my mate set up in the nettles, plenty of cover with all the cowslip.. I decided to walk the big wood behind and get stuff moving, if id of known what the farmer had been cutting this week id of been armed with me 6.5 saw this buck on his own and he didn't have a clue I was walking up behind him, when he sussed me at about 30yrd he took off into the woods and brought his ladies out for a run hung about at the old pen for a while and chilled out, no birds going down this season so its a right mess... picked up a bit of tea for the fox 6 Quote Link to post
si brown 8,486
the paten was building up nicely then the flight line changed so I set up in the foliage about 60yrd to the other side of the pattern to try and drive them through the middle of us but it was a non starter. I caught this tiny terrorist in the corner of my eye to the right about 40yrd away, they can fair move for little feckers.. saw one dragging a rabbit across a field last year, they have to be at the top for size to weight strength. so after deciding the crows weren't playing any more I went over to see me mate, I could hear his tummy rumbling and started laughing.. he was just shaking his head so we called it a daw and headed off in search of food and a power nap! put money on it my mate will be back out for him tomorrow morning! I won't be 8 Quote Link to post
shovel leaner 7,650
Interesting write up Si , I’d like to read more of them . Why are you worried about getting your windows put through? That’s why we keep it to user names . I don’t want my name and picture out there for that reason . 3 1 Quote Link to post

I shoot a lot on my own and I’ve had some proper runnings over the years in the fields, it’s when they bring it to your door step! ive got young kids and I don’t think the neighbours would be to happy with the reaction they would revive Quote Link to post
Stavross 18,302
Fair enough, I try and keep out the way of nutters now, my FAC means far more to me than putting some crank in their place, when I was younger and out running dogs I’d think nothing of rolling around in a field with some idiot, but I’m getting a bit old for that now, I find now that if you know your land and rights then it’s best to be polite and explain to them that they are the uneducated idiot, they really don’t like being talked down to in a calm and quiet manner 4 Quote Link to post

I used to always confront people when I was younger but now older and wiser just keep out of the way , anything for a quiet life. 4 Quote Link to post
shovel leaner 7,650
I’ve honestly never had a problem with anyone because of my hunting and shooting activities. I keep myself to myself. There is a chap up the road from me and you only have to look at his house and his beaten up discovery to know he is into shooting . He only ever wears realtree pattern clothing . BASC sticker in the windscreen. Pheasant feeders and drinkers in the front garden a weathervane with a man with a dog and gun . It’s almost like he is saying “ this is who I am , f@ck you if you don’t like it . I don’t know if he has any problems as I don’t talk to him if I can help it . But it takes the heat off me . 2 5 Quote Link to post
Meece 1,958
Over the years I've had a few encounters with the General public and plod. No one has been confrontational but they could have developed. the way I look at it is that nowadays with mobiles anyone can ring up plod and make allegations that shots have been fired in their direction and they feel threatened or endangered. I don't know but Plod would probably feel obliged to come out and cause a nuisance of themselves. One time when I was on my own night shooting I did have a person who came out into the fields with a Small torch looking for me. Seeing as I out on this land very frequently it was easy for me to use the ground contours and background to just disappear. I could see no advantage to engage with this person and moved around a woòd to operate in fields further over. It didn't inconvienience me because I'd scanned that side and any disturbance might have moved any Charlie over onto the other side. Never did know who it was. I prefer it when it is hard weather. It keeps all the idiots inside by the fire and tv. Edited July 25, 2020 by Meece 1 Quote Link to post
