Exactly that, I can only sell my eggs as “gate sales” otherwise it’s a whole rigmarole of forms, licenses, government departments blah blah blah

Do you keep ducks wilf

2.50 for a duck egg and 4.50 for a goose egg here.

The less officials know the better.

The fishing argument is a lot more complicated than people realise.  Every day hundreds of French and Spanish registered refrigerated lorries arrive in the UK loaded with French and Spanish farm produ

I farm totally chemical free and to help out a bit towards the chicken feed I sell a few eggs, now I’m not organic because I don’t want to pay £300 for someone to give me a sticker but to all intents and purposes that’s how I’m farming.

Organic eggs are €3 for 6, I charge €2 for my eggs and €8 for a tray of 30......someone said to me the other day “That’s expensive, I can get 30 eggs for €3.50 down the paki shop”

My reply was “on you go then” because you just can’t argue with stupid ;)

Organic chicken feed is €15 a sack compared to €8 for non organic by the way.......same for all organic a animal feed, twice the price !
Farmers are getting the same money for organic lamb at the mart as they are for non organic ?.....there’s no reason to do right other than what your own heart tells you, the whole system is a bollocks mate

Wilf, you feed your chucks year round ?....they penned ?..... I have a dozen that wander over a couple of acres that I only feed over winter, they pretty much self sufficient .....they lay all over the shop mind you !

Mine are in a very large run, much as I’d love to have them running all over the show the dogs would just eat them.

50 harvests left.that scary stuff right there.im sure someone mentioned to me that they spray some crops with round up to kill it so it can be harvested earlier.

I've said it before I can look in the fridge now and there will be grapes or some other fruit from Africa etc.

It's absolutely crazy.

Sadly what ever man touches he destroys.

They recon about 100 million sharks are killed each year.its a mind boggling amount.

Just sitting on my sofa I'm a bit shocked that there would be 100 million sharks alive.so really there must be a billion sharks to kill 100 million a year.

Consumers have to take a lot of the blame as well mate, they won’t buy the products.

The UK catches some of the finest spider crab in the world and it all gets exported because we won’t eat it !!

Regulation in fishing and farming is killing everything, there’s a few small farmers who don’t fit “in the system” starting to take measures to bypass the government and Agriculture people and take control of their farms and their products.

Pollack, Whiting, spider crab, mackerel (well not now its trendy) loads of fish that are overlooked...for cod..(batter some Pollack and see if you can taste the difference...of course bass has been the other favourite for years, but gurnard or bream are just as good.. (better maybe)...dabs are lovely...even flounder, not as good as plaice I know but still tasty...

The thing with this country is the majority only think of cod and chips, the French, Spanish, Portuguese etc make amazing dishes out of a variety of fish, fish stews or bouillabaisse, chowders, etc...

Fish cakes for instance, you could use pouting, Whiting etc and most would be none the wiser...

Its easy to conserve stocks if you arent completely blinkered to eating only 1 fish (cod) and thinking lobster is the bees knees.... give me a crab over a lobster any day!

As you say mate, it’s the processors getting the money and people don’t want to pay €30 a kilo to eat fish, but they would happily pay the fisherman a few euro a kilo more than he is getting from processors and he only too happy to do it.

I was out off Sligo boat fishing the other year, we caught a load of mackerel and pollock, got back and nobody wanted hardly any of it !!

I went home with about 6 stone of fish because I just couldn’t see that wasted ....why bother even killing it if you don’t want it......stuff like that snaps me, it really does.

I get not everyone can understand the sea has more to offer than battered cod as location dictates.. was great to put something different on their plate.

And that my point.

Only take what you need. I could spent all day every day out at sea, but why bother. A few days a year see me right for what I need.

Pity it wasn't like that, sell your catch, beef lamb veg locally for a fair price. But that won't happen.  To many rules and regulations.  Plus the tac man wants his cut

Wouldnt it be great if life became simple again, I know it will.never happen and I'm not a good advocate perhaps for it... but it would be a dream to catch, harvest, barter etc only what you need...

Might not get back to simpler times again, but there's so much our countries can provide for us, and help out local and national food industries. Also it would be great if people were encouraged to grow there own fruit and veg, just a small bit, what they can. And more allotments opened up. It would take a small bit of pressure of the farm lands. Plus then you could swap and barter between each other.

Ahh, there is a definite shift happening over here, especially in the west where there a lot of smallholders / small farmers.

There is a movement called “Food citizenship” and lots of small producers doing their own thing.

Also the start of an open food network which is a platform for small producers and co-operatives to sell direct to the end user.

There is an amazing business called Drumanilra close to me, they came over from England to inherit 40 acres.....they have 300 now and direct market everything, all organic.

Lots and lots of English refugees and locals all living in tune to greater and lesser degrees, producing good wholesome food, direct selling, making craft goods, blacksmiths, wool artists, straw bales builders.

I gave 2 fleeces away the other night to a great couple who came over from your neck of the woods, they had a straw bale place over there on a little farm of their own but wasn’t allowed to stay because of planning.....came over here and they are supplying restaurants with wonderful veg, she is an artist.

In return the lady is going to show my wife how to weave baskets.

lovely people, lots like that.

Its happening mate, as I said to Jetro, there’s a growing movement that are just saying “no thanks” to the system, thinking outside the box and doing there own things.

And people will support it, the customers are there for decent, authentic things and food......there are a lot of people here who care about their food
